Meow: Lions lay egg

Fat Guy Corner

The Lions leave the desert with yet another loss. The Arizona Cardinals held on for a 14-6 victory on Sunday. Yes, it was a total offensive struggle for both teams as the defenses dominated this contest. The intriguing thing to me is why the Detroit Lions cannot win out in Arizona? There have been times where the Lions were favored to win, but couldn’t get it done. Detroit has now lost eight in a row to Arizona in the desert. The last time Detroit won out in Arizona? How about 1993 a 21-14 victory.

I thought the play calling was terrible. I also thought Matthew Stafford played a horrific game at quarterback. Detroit’s offense couldn’t even muster up a touchdown! I realize Arizona has a good defense, but come on! Detroit has the No. 1 defense and Arizona mustered up two touchdowns. I really didn’t expect for the Lions to win this game as I did pick against them. However, the game was on the field to be won and they didn’t get the win. Detroit falls to 7-3 with a trip to New England to face the red-hot Patriots and Tom Brady on Sunday. Detroit’s No. 1 defense will really be tested. Brady and the Patriots are really rolling offensively and don’t lose very often at home, period! The crystal cheese ball prediction: Tommy Boy’s Boys 34 and A Quiet Meow 24. The Lions will drop to 7-4, but will then have three-straight home games. There will be no collapse this season. I promise all you Lions fans.

Reshuffle the deck

The college football playoff weekly top four will have another shuffling of teams this week. The number-one Mississippi State Bulldogs lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide 25-20 last week. Nick Saban always finds a way for his Roll Tide to get into the National Championship mix, doesn’t he? Love him or hate him, he is the best in the college coaching business.

Florida State survives against the Miami Hurricanes in another game the FSU team should have/could have lost! The Selection Show is Tuesday night. My four teams are Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, and Mississippi State. Let’s see if the committee selects the same four teams on Tuesday night.

V-Mart returns

The hot stove heated up in Tiger Town the last 10 days. The Tigers picked up Anthony Gose from the Toronto Blue Jays. He is a solid hitter with a robust average of .226. Hey, Tiger fans, that gets you excited, doesn’t it? I didn’t think so. I hope the Tigers have a better plan than Mr. Gose. Let’s all hope the Tigers just plan on platooning him and not make him the every-day center fielder.

The big news, though, is that Victor Martinez is returning. V-Mart signed a four-year $68 million deal. I will say if V-Mart would have left the Tigers, it would have been a long summer for all of us. He helps protect Miguel’s bat all summer long. V-Mart is a professional hitter who can rake and the Tigers don’t have many hitters in the lineup.

Speaking of non-hitters in the line up, Detroit picked up the option on A.O. (Automatic Out) Alex Avilia. Alex will make $5.4 million next season. I don’t have time to break down the dollar amount on each “K.” Alex needs to dramatically improve at the plate in 2015. The Tigers have more holes to fill in these next four months so we shall see how they do.
