The “Miggy” milestone of 500 homers was reached on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.
In the sixth inning Miguel Cabrera launched a bomb and joined an elite fraternity in baseball becoming the 28th MLB player to hit 500 dingers. The pitcher who served up 500 was Steven Matz for the Toronto Blue Jays. Now he will always be associated with the historical Miguel 500th homer. Miguel becomes the first wearing a Detroit Tiger uniform to accomplish the feat.
Miguel Cabrera has been playing for 19 years in Major League Baseball, which is a nice career and shows you how long you have to play to reach these milestones. We all know his power numbers have been in decline for the last few years. I know I predicted he would do it at home against the L.A. Angels, but I was wrong. (Much like my football picks that will be coming soon.) Congratulations Miguel, you are now in elite company. I would also love to see Miguel reach 3,000 hits for his career in a Tiger uniform.
The Detroit Lions were an embarrassment on Saturday in Pittsburgh. The final score was Pittsburgh 26-20 over the “Lie Downs” and that’s exactly what they did — lie down. I watched the entire game and the first half was just sickening. The final score was not indicative of how bad the Lions were outplayed. The Lions’ defense was torched and if that is “biting knee caps” nobody on the opposing teams will need band aids at the end of the games.
I saw missed coverage in the secondary to go along with brutal tackling, just like when Patricia was coach. I mean, the Pittsburgh quarterbacks were 25 for 35 and 323 yards. The Lions quarterbacks a pathetic 19 for 32 and 182 yards.
It’s going to be a long season in Motown, I can tell you that! I see three or four wins and 1-16 is not out of the question, trust me. The effort on Saturday stunk like “Motor City Kitty Litter.” The Lions will wrap up the pre-season on Friday night at Ford Field against the Indianapolis Colts. The kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
The college football season in the Big Ten starts this Saturday as Nebraska and Illinois take to the football field. Wow, did football season sneak up on me this year! The Ohio State Buckeyes and Minnesota will play their Big Ten opener on Sept. 2. The Spartans travel to Northwestern for a 9 p.m. kickoff against Northwestern on Sept. 3. The Wolverines open up at home with Western Michigan on Sept. 4. I cannot wait for college football to kick off here in 2021. I love it! Fall is just around the corner.
A look around the baseball scene in the American League shows the Tampa Bay Rays with a 4.5 game lead over the New York Yankees.
The Boston Red Sox have faded fast in the standings. The Chicago White Sox have a huge lead in the American League Central.
The American League West is a tight race between the first place Houston Astros and Oakland A’s.
The National League East has the red hot Atlanta Braves up on the Philadelphia Phillies by five games.
The Central leader is the Brewers with a solid seven game lead over Cincinnati.
The National League West is a tight race with San Francisco and L.A. Dodgers. Baseball in the month of September will be fantastic as races heat up.
