FLUSHING TWP. — Flushing Township attorney Steve Moulton is calling it a career after 40-plus years of service to the township.

Moulton, who has provided legal counsel for the township since 1980, attended his last Board of Trustees meeting as the township’s attorney on Jan. 13. To replace him, the township board unanimously approved the hiring of attorney Matt McKone, who is also currently the City of Flushing’s attorney.

Supervisor Fred Thorsby said that he and the administrative team have greatly appreciated Moulton’s legal service and will miss his contributions to the township.

“Steve has provided me, (Clerk) Wendy (Meinburg) and (Treasurer) Terry (Peck) and the board with so much valuable information and direction,” he said. “Not having him available here will be difficult to fathom.”

Flushing Township Police Chief Mark Bolin also commended Moulton for his legal work with the township police department.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Steve Moulton,” Bolin said. “The best way to describe him is first class, the gold standard, a polished professional.”

Moulton served with numerous boards and administrations during his tenure with Flushing Township, helping to handle contracts and legal review for the township and craft several important ordinances.

Outside of working with Flushing Township government, Moulton has practiced municipal law, real property law, estate planning and probate law in the Greater Flint area for over 40 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1974 and his Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School in 1977.

Thorsby said that McKone—who was recommended by Moulton—will bring knowledge and experience to the township attorney position, along with a good reputation among his peers and longevity in the Flushing area.

McKone, 45, started the McKone Law Firm PLLC in Flushing with his father Chuck, a longtime Flushing-based attorney who retired in 2018. His firm has worked with the City of Flushing since 2013.

McKone’s firm primarily practices municipal law, criminal law and family law, and he also provides legal counsel for the City of Durand, the Village of New Lothrop and the New Lothrop Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

McKone, a 1994 graduate of Flushing High School and a lifelong resident of the Flushing area, said that he’s eager to provide another local government in his community with legal assistance.

“I look forward to giving the township as much good advice as I can,” he said. “The beauty of doing municipal work is that you get to make a difference. By going to the meetings, you get to see the people, hear their questions, comments and concerns and learn how you can improve their communities.”

McKone received his law degree from Michigan State University’s College of Law and became a licensed attorney in 2001. He is a member of the Genesee County Bar Association and the Shiawassee County Bar Association.
