Movies in the Park rolls out new season on June 19

FLUSHING — Flushing’s Movies in the Park is back starting June 19 with five new features and a line-up of family fun all summer long.

Movies in the Park, one of Flushing’s favorite pastimes, will be held every other Saturday evening at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.) at the Riverview Park Bandshell. The 2021 movie lineup will debut with “The Croods: A New Age” on June 19 and continue with “Scoob!” on July 10, “Tom & Jerry” on July 24, “Trolls World Tour” on Aug. 7 and “Raya and the Last Dragon” on Aug. 21.

Low-cost concessions will also be provided each night at the Teen Canteen by the Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation.

Entering its 25th year, Movies in the Park has received generous support from local businessman Dale Harris and several other donors who have stepped up to cover the cost of the series. Funding from the Flushing City Parks and Recreation Committee has also provided for new equipment at the Teen Canteen, including a new slushy machine and a nacho cheese warmer.

Danielle Smith, Chairperson for Movies in the Park, said that this year’s animated movie lineup offers appealing entertainment for families with young children, while the 2021 version of “Tom & Jerry” brings back some classic cartoon nostalgia with a new twist for the whole family.

“I think it’s special because it’s just a free outdoor activity that families of all ages can come together and enjoy,” Smith said. “You can watch the movies from the seats or bring a lawn chair and blanket to spread out and view the movie. You can bring your own popcorn or stop by our concessions stand for our popcorn or favorite movie snack at far less than movie theater prices, with all proceeds going to a great cause (Thomas Smith Memorial Foundation).”

Smith said that the Riverview Park Bandshell will also provide plenty of seating and space for safe social distancing.

Volunteers are also needed to help with set up and tear down for the five movie nights, along with clean-up in the seating area, bathrooms and the Teen Canteen. Those interested in helping can contact Danielle Smith at nonni13@aol.com.
