FLINT TWP. — Township police took six people into custody Monday afternoon following a gun battle on Casaloma Drive off Beecher Road, said Police Chief George Sippert in a report at the Township Board meeting Monday night.
One person suffered a minor gunshot wound to the leg but refused treatment at the scene, Sippert said.
He said calls of numerous shots being fired began coming in to 911 at about 1:10 p.m. Police responded to what apparently was a shootout between occupants at a home on Casaloma and a vehicle parked on the street out front, he said. A somewhat confusing situation followed in which police had to determine the victims from the suspects.
Police officers were called in to assist from the cities of Burton, Flint, Flushing and Swartz Creek, Clayton Township, the Flint Area Narcotics Group, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police.
Police secured the perimeter of two houses on Casaloma involved in the altercation and issued advisories to the public to avoid the area. Carman-Ainsworth schools reportedly notified parents to make arrangements to pick up their children because buses would not stop in the area.
The township’s police Incident Response Team arrived and cleared both houses.
Sippert said no one had been charged as of Monday night but all involved were being questioned at the police department to determine what happened, he said.
He also said the investigation is ongoing and that police still were working to confirm that the shooting was linked to a homicide about 1:30 a.m. Monday at the the Purple Moon nightclub on Dort Highway in Flint. Flint police have identified the victim as 20-year-old Ricky Seales Jr. Public records list a Ricky Seales as the owner of the house on Casaloma where the shooting took place.
A police press release issued later Monday night provided more details. It stated that township officers first responded to a call about a man with a gun in the 2000 block of Casaloma.
Before officers arrived on scene, multiple shots were fired into the house. Information was given to 911 that one suspect had fled from the scene and was running north bound on Casaloma toward its dead end.
Officers arrived on scene and found the suspect’s vehicle had crashed into a tree at Beecher and Casaloma as he was attempting to flee.
Officers quickly learned that a suspect had ran to and hidden inside a home about a half a block north of the first scene in the 2100 block of Casaloma.
The first officers on scene at the home in the 2100 block assisted a female and child in fleeing from the home where the unknown person had entered.
It was determined that the first house in the 2400 block might possibly still have persons inside but it was unclear if they were victims and/or suspects.
The I.R.T. Team made entry into the home and secured the residence. Next the I.R.T. Team entered the home in the 2100 block where one person was taken into custody.
