FLINT TWP. — Jose Hernandez of Flint has become the newest member of the township fire department.
On the recommendation of then Fire Chief John Ringwelski, the township board at its April 20 meeting unanimously approved hiring Hernandez as a probationary on-call fire fighter.
In one of his final acts as Fire Chief, Ringwelski presented to Hernandez various, pins and insignia that come with hiring in.
In response to questioning, Hernandez said he lives about a mile away, which is in keeping with residency requirements set by the fire department.
Finding, training and keeping on-call firefighters is an ongoing mission of the fire department, similar to departments nationwide that are experiencing a scarcity of people wanting to sign up for on-call work.
Township Supervisor Karyn Miller welcomed Hernandez aboard and commented that she had attended his Fire Academy graduation ceremony.
During his probationary period, Hernandez will continue to train.
