New year, new Lions coach

Fat Guy Corner

The New Year is here and I hope all of you have a great 2018.

The sports world has a National College Football Championship game on Monday night. It will be an all-SEC one with Alabama and Georgia squaring off. Before that, though, the NFL Playoffs wild-card weekend opens up on Saturday and Sunday. The “Black Monday” in the NFL came and many coaches lost their head coaching jobs. As predicted by me, Jimmy Caldwell of the Detroit Lions is currently unemployed. He’s not alone, however, as four others were also fired and more may follow.

Sparty finishes on high note; Wolverines choke

The college football bowl season has also come to a close and Michigan State was a winner and Michigan a chokejob loser. Congratulations to MSU coach Mark Dantanio, who picked up his 100th career win with the victory! What a way to end a season despite the snub by the playoff committee. Dantonio’s used to that and cares only about his team and its success. There are lots of happy Spartans looking forward to the new year, that’s for sure!

And the winner is…

The Beat the Fat Guy contest has also ended and three people finished ahead of me, and one tied with me. I will draw the winner out of a hat this week and results will be known next week. I want to thank all who participated, as this was the largest amount of entries so far. I also want to note that a lot of people quit due to my hot start and shame on them! The season is 17 weeks and a long grind. I hope next year is bigger and better!

Time for a change in Ann Arbor

Now, let’s get into some of this sports business. Let’s start with Michigan State’s bowl victory over the Washington State Cougars, as predicted by me, by the way. The Spartans dominated the Cougars, as Washington State played without starting quarterback Luke Falk. I don’t think Falk would have beat Michigan State, but the game would have been much closer. The Spartans had a tremendous season and Coach Mark Dantonio is a tremendous coach. The Spartans look forward to 2018 and this football program is in great shape.

I say “Let’s Sparty” and brow beat all Michigan fans because you can! I’ll start. The running joke is that Michigan fans travel well! The Spartan fans know what I am talking about.

All the Go Blue fans traveled to watch an epic collapse and numbing bowl loss to South Carolina. The loss should be an embarrassment to all Wolverine fans. The play calling is, and was, atrocious. The quarterback play was not good enough to start on a high school team, let alone at the college level. The coaching of the one Jimmy Harbaugh is under serious scrutiny! The Harbaugh honeymoon period is over, I would think, for most Wolverines fans. Am I right? The Big Ten Conference had only one loss in bowl season and everyone can thank the Maize and Blue for wrecking the perfect record.

NFL unemployment line

The NFL will have new faces stomping the sidelines in 2018. The Arizona Cardinals’ Bruce Arians retired from coaching and the unemployed list is John Fox (Chicago), Jack Del Rio (Oakland), Chuck Pagano (Indianapolis) and Jimmy Caldwell (Detroit). The Bears, Raiders, Colts, Lions, Giants, and Cardinals all need new coaches. The strong rumor of Jon Gruden going to take over the Oakland Raiders is one I believe will happen. The main concern is the Lions’ situation. The Lions have many choices, as general manager Bob Quinn makes his first head coaching hire. Bob, if you remember, decided to keep Caldwell when he took over his Lions’ position. I think firing Caldwell was the right move and I will get into that more next week.

Fat Guy pat on the back

I finished the NFL season at 119- 110-8 and my best bets were a solid 10-5-1, which is pretty darn good. So much sports to talk about and not enough space, so, to be continued next week.

P.S:. Alabama wins 27-20 over Georgia on Monday night. Remember, you heard it here first!
