Bake sale

FLINT TWP. — The Carman-Ainsworth softball program will hold a bake sale noon-3 p.m. Feb. 5 at Kroger’s, located at the corner of Corunna and Dye Rds.

Items at the bake sale will be sold for donations. All donations will be given to the Carman- Ainsworth Senior Center to purchase baby products for area families.

Valentine’s Day fun at McCarty Library

FLINT TWP. — Children of all ages are invited to McCarty Library, 2071 S. Graham Rd., for a Valentine’s Day program 1 p.m. Feb. 5.

Silent auction, spaghetti dinner for PAWS

FLINT — PAWS Animal Rescue announces its upcoming spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser Feb. 19 at Welfare Masonic Temple, 6208 N. Genesee Rd.

There are two dinner times for the all-you-caneat dinner: 2-4 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $4 for kids ages 3-12 and free for children under 3.

Individuals not able to stay for dinner can get a “To Go” dinner. Tickets are available from PAWS volunteers or through PayPal on the organization’s website.

The silent auction features 50/50 drawings, and there also is a bake sale. The auction ends at 6:30 p.m. PAWS is looking for donations from various businesses and individuals for the silent auction and bake sale. Thomas to speak at Historical Society meeting

SWARTZ CREEK — Historian and Civil War researcher Len Thomas will be the featured guest at the Swartz Creek Area Historical Society’s meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Swartz Creek City Hall, 8083 Civic Dr.

Thomas, a resident of Swartz Creek, will talk about Lucy Blanchard, aka “Elusive Lucy,” a Civil War nurse who died in Fenton. He will share Blanchard’s story, which came from his research, with attendees of the meeting. The public is invited to attend.

The Swartz Creek Area Historical Society meets the second Wednesday of each month.

Volunteer drivers needed

GENESEE COUNTY — The American Red Cross Genesee-Lapeer Chapter Med-A-Ride Program needs volunteer drivers.

The Genesee-Lapeer Chapter works with Lapeer County residents who need help with transportation to out of town medical appointments.

The Chapter has a van that has been equipped with handicapped equipment, such as a chair lift, etc., in order to help these individuals.

Volunteer drivers are needed one day a week. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Janet Hamm at 810-232-1401, ext. 304. — G.G.

Swartz Creek accepting Schools of Choice applications

SWARTZ CREEK — Swartz Creek Community Schools is accepting applications for enrollment in three of its elementary schools and its middle school for the second semester of the 2010-2011 school year under the Schools of Choice program. The enrollment is open for students who do not reside within the district’s boundaries.

Dieck, Gaines and Syring Elementary Schools and Swartz Creek Middle school each have 10 openings spread throughout the kindergarten to the eighth grades.

Parents interested in enrolling their children should contact Debbie Vanderlip at 810-591-2385 for more information on the grades and buildings that are open.

Students are not charged tuition and do not need a release from their resident (home) district if accepted by Swartz Creek. Transportation will be the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Spaghetti dinner at St. Bartholomew’s

SWARTZ CREEK — St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, 9252 Miller Rd., announces its spaghetti dinner 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

The dinner is all-you-can-eat and features Fr. Gene’s homemade sauce, garlic toast, salad and drinks. Cost is $7 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12 and $15 for a family with children under 12. Takeouts also are available.

Veteran’s chili dinner fundraiser

SWARTZ CREEK — The Swartz Creek Women’s Club will hold its annual chili dinner fundraiser 4-7 p.m. Feb. 11 at Swartz Creek United Methodist Church.

The fundraiser benefits the Veteran’s Memorial and Valentine’s for Vets. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under.

The menu includes chili, hot dog, corn bread, dessert and drink. Attendees are asked to bring one to two Valentine’s cards to put in a Valentine’s box made by the Girl Scouts. The box of Valentine’s wil be sent to the Saginaw VA Hospital. There also will be a silent auction for the Swartz Creek Veteran’s Memorial.

Those who cannot attend but want to donate can purchase a ticket and give it to the food pantry to be given away. The fundraiser is sponsored by the GFWC SC Women’s Club.
