Meeting canceled

FLINT TWP. — The July 5 regular meeting of the township board has been canceled, after a vote by the board at its meeting this week. Township Treasurer Sandra Wright voted against it and Trustee Barbara Vert was absent. During public comment, resident Chuck Hughes also objected, saying “I don’t understand why you guys are canceling meetings other than that you don’t like to work. We pay you to show up for meetings.’’ He said the board has canceled at least three meetings since setting a schedule for the year. — R.S.

Grand Opening this weekend

FLINT TWP. — The Swartz Creek Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Grand Opening Celebration for one of its newest member, Cooper’s at 1519 Bristol Road, at 4 p.m. Saturday. Grand opening specials including a beer and burger for $5 will be offered all day. The chamber also announced that beginning July 12 and continuing every other Tuesday, Cooper’s will be the hosting site for its “Creek Speaks,’’ a new after-hours network open to all SC chamber members, beginning at 5 p.m. with social networking followed by a meeting at 6 p.m. — R.S.

Charities benefit from event

FLINT TWP. — Applications are now being accepted from non-profits for the sixth annual Macy’s Shop for A Cause event on Aug. 27. Non-profits who sign up for the free fundraiser get to keep all proceeds raised from the sale of $5 shopping passes good for a 25 percent discount on Aug. 27 and a chance to win a $500 gift card. All non-profits with 501(c) or 170(c)1 status including school booster groups and religious organizations can sign up for the benefit by going to the website at Since 2006, Shop for a Cause has raised more than $38 million for charities nationwide. — R.S.

UAW 5K walk/march a go

FLINT TWP. — UAW Local 598 on Van Slyke Road has received permission to conduct its annual 5K Project Vox Walk/March from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on July 17, in conjunction with the 17th Annual Soberfest of Recovery Picnic. Approval from the township board last week is for a walking route that starts at the Union City Ball Field on Torrey Road and mainly follows residential side streets but will slow northbound traffic on Torrey Road and stop traffic on Maple Road for walkers to cross to the parking lot of the Genesee Intermediate School District. Soberfest will be held rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the ballfield and includes a softball tournament, children’s games and activities, a euchre tournament, volleyball, raffles, dancing and more. Mideast festival planned

FLINT TWP. — Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 4133 Calkins Road, plans to hold its annual Mid-East Festival on July 15-17. The township board granted permission this week for festivities to be held from 11 a.m. to midnight on July 15, noon to midnight on July 16 and noon to 6 p.m. on the final day. The permit is contingent on final inspection after set-up which includes a vendor’s tent. Other requirements met include security provided and a special license for beer and wine sales for on premise consumption. Scheduled events include homemade Mid- Eastern food, traditional Lebanese music and dancing, a beer tent (ages 21+), cooking, dancing and language demonstrations, cultural and religious displays, children’s activities and games, church tours and more.
