The Wild Card NFL weekend was really wild in Kansas City. The Kansas City Chiefs have become specialists at gagging football games at home. The Chiefs, who were up 21-3 at the half, lost to the Tennessee Titans 22-21. How about a solid 1-11 the last 12 playoff games, and the Chiefs have lost their last six at home? Their coach, Andy Reid, has lost two playoff games at Kansas City in which his teams led by 18 and 28 points! How frustrated Kansas City football fans must be right now.
The Atlanta Falcons went in and stunned the L.A. Rams as an underdog in L.A. The Atlanta defense was outstanding holding the Rams to 13 points in a 26-13 victory. The Jacksonville Jaguars took down the Buffalo Bills in a 10-3 defensive struggle. If you love defense, this was the game to watch. The last wildcard game on Sunday was a beauty between the Saints and Panthers. This was a high-scoring affair, as New Orleans won 31-26 over Carolina. The underdogs covered every game this weekend, which was total opposite of last season where all the favorites covered the number.
Let’s move on and look at the match-ups this weekend in the AFC and NFC Playoffs.
The Saturday night slate starts at 4:35 p.m. with the Atlanta Falcons headed to Philadelphia. The Falcons are road favorites of three points in this one. The No. 1 seed is an underdog. The reason is easy; the quarterback for Philadelphia is Nick Foles playing for the injured Carson Wentz. The Eagles’ defense will have to win this game. The play of Nick Foles has been horrendous. I will go with Matt Ryan and the Falcons in a close football game. The Dirty Birds 20 and Clipped Wings 17.
The Saturday night cap is Tennessee at New England at 8:15 p.m. Do we need to spend much time on this football game? The Patriots are two-touchdown favorites to win. If the Titans win, its the upset of the decade! The Pats roll and Brady and company win this one 34-14. This is the worst game of the weekend to watch.
The Pittsburgh Steelers hook up with Jacksonville on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. These two played in October and Jacksonville defeated Pittsburgh. I believe this game will have a different outcome. I cannot see Jacksonville winning twice in Pittsburgh. I think Big Ben will not throw five interceptions in this football game, as he did in the first one. The Pittsburgh boys are favored by a little over a touchdown. I see the final score as Terrible Towels 23 and Jax 17.
The best game of the weekend is the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints at 4:40 p.m. The Saints are four-point underdogs in this game. The Saints have Drew Brees under center and the Minnesota Vikings are a lights-out defense and have quarterback Case Keenum. The advantage at quarterback is all New Orleans. However, I like the Vikings’ defense to get it done in this game. The Horny Helmets 23 and Saints Go Marching Home 21.
Tide claim sixth title
The Alabama Crimson Tide win an instant classic in overtime over Georgia 26-23 Monday night. If you weren’t able to stay up, you missed a great ending. Alabama coach Nick Saban pulled starting quarterback Jalen Hurts after a poor performance in the first half and put in true freshman Tua Tagovailoa. People will be pronouncing that name for a while here as the kid threw a bomb deep to clinch the win in overtime. Bama was down 13-0 at halftime and had to do something. That had to be heartbreaking for Hurts, but he kept bailing out and panicked.
Talk about heartbreak, you had to feel for Georgia’s quarterback, Jake Fromm, who got the Bulldogs oh so close to a national title. That’ll be a bitter pill he’ll be swallowing for some time. As they say, play big or go home.
