NHL playoff predictions, MLB trades and a delayed derby

Fat Guy Corner

The NHL is skating closer to conference finals. The Eastern Conference has the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 3-1 advantage on the Boston Bruins. The Boston hockey club won the first game and Tampa has now reeled off three straight victories. I believe by time you read this the Tampa Bay team will have advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals and Boston will be on the golf course.

The fat guy predicted a Tampa series win and it might be the only series win I will get. I think the New York Islanders, who are up 3-1 on Philadelphia Flyers, will prevail and play Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Western Conference has the Dallas Stars in total control of the Colorado Avalanche with a 3-1 lead. The Avalanche are a banged up hockey club leaving Dallas in the lead. I wish Colorado was healthy, because I think they are a better hockey club than Dallas.

My upset special with Vancouver is not looking so well either as Vegas looks like a pretty strong team to me on the ice. The Vegas boys are up 3-1 on Vancouver and will eliminate them quickly.

I have watched a lot of the playoffs and I think it will end up Vegas and Tampa playing for the right to hoist Lord Stanley. I have really enjoyed watching hockey in the summer time.

The baseball trade deadline was Monday and here are some of the deals that have taken place. The San Diego Padres have added slugger Mitch Moreland from the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox received a minor league outfielder and infielder in the deal. The San Diego team also added Mike Clevinger, a starting pitcher from the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago Cubs added a right handed hitter in outfielder Jose Martinez from the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays received cash and two players to be named later.

I love the old player to be named later deals! I find it funny. Can you imagine the conversation? “Hey, we want this player you have.” “Oh yeah? What do we get for him?” “Oh, some cash and two players we pick out of a hat!”

The Atlanta Braves picked up pitcher Tommy Milone from the Baltimore Orioles and you guessed it — two players to be named later.

How about the five game winning streak of the Tigers! The Tig’s are a five hundred baseball club at 16-16 and only four games out of first place. I must admit, at the half way point of the season I did not have Detroit a five hundred baseball club. Let’s all be honest, none of you Tiger fans expected them to be this competitive in 2020! If you did I tip my fork and steak knife to you.

The American League Central is a wide open race for the division and the Tigers are included in the conversation.

The finish at the BMW Championship was sensational. It looked like Jon Rahm would win in regulation until Dustin Johnson drilled a double breaker putt from 45-foot to birdie on eighteen. The sudden death playoff provided a 66-foot putt drained by Jon Rahm for the victory. I say wow what drama on the golf course! This golf course played super tough and the high scores posted proved it — only five golfers finished under par!

The Tour Championship is next at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia next weekend.

The Kentucky Derby will run this weekend and Tiz the Law will be a prohibitive favorite to win. I think he will be even money to win the Derby. I have to admit, I cannot bet against the horse Tiz the Law and win easily.
