No Triple Crown to be had in 2021, NHL crystal cheeseball predictions and a PGA Championship preview

Fat Guy Corner

The Preakness last Saturday was won by Rombauer, who left the gates at 12-1 odds. I let everyone know last week this horse was live and could win the Preakness. I can honestly say, the fat guy made a small wager on Rombauer and it paid off quite nicely! The other horse I liked, Midnight Bourbon, finished second and I also made a few bucks at the window on him. Let’s just say, late Saturday night was a profitable night for the fat guy.

The Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit, who swirled in controversy, finished third in the Preakness. The horse Medina Spirit ran a decent race, it just was not enough to out run the other two horses. The Triple Crown drama and hype will not happen for the horse racing industry in 2021. The Belmont Stakes will not feature the horse Medina Spirit. Why, you ask? The New York Racing Association has suspended Bob Baffert from entering horses or having them in the stable area in New York. The Bob Baffert saga will continue to grow in the horse racing industry in my opinion. I say, good job Bob!

The NHL Playoffs round one have begun and the action was hot and heavy. If not for Tampa Bay scoring with a minute to go against Florida, all three games in day one would have been overtime games. Let me tell you, the Florida and Tampa series — called the battle of the sunshine state — is must-watch hockey. I watched the entire game one and the fights and offensive hockey was tremendous. I implore you to watch this series and you will be hooked on NHL Playoff hockey, trust me.

How about the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals have played two overtime games already in their first two games. The Washington Capitals won game one and the Boston Bruins took game two. I cannot state enough how much excitement a NHL Playoff overtime game provides. I am literally glued to the television during overtime periods.

I will give you the fat guys picks now in all eight series. I like the New York Islanders over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Boston Bruins will defeat the Washington Capitals. I see the Carolina Hurricanes ripping the Nashville Predators in a short series. The St. Louis Blues will get crushed by the Colorado Avs. The boys in Vegas, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, will prevail over the Minnesota Wild. The sunshine state battle will go to Florida over Tampa Bay in a mild upset, I believe.

Let’s slide the puck into Canada and the two series, which will take place up north. The Edmonton Oilers I like over the Winnipeg Jets. How about the Original Six match up of Toronto and Montreal? The Toronto Maple Leafs will remove the Montreal Canadiens from the playoff picture. The crystal cheeseball of NHL Hockey Playoffs by the fat guy has spoken!

The PGA Championship — golf’s second major — takes place this weekend at Kiawah, South Carolina. The last time the PGA Championship was in Kiawah the winner was Rory McIlroy, who won the event by a whopping eight strokes. Can Rory repeat another PGA Championship victory here in South Carolina in 2021? I would say very much so after his victory last weekend. The course will play a record long 7,876 yards this weekend. That is a lot of golf course real estate to cover! The four favorites according to the golf world handicappers in Las Vegas are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth at 12-1 odds. It seems strange not to see Bryson DeChambeau or Dustin Johnson as favorites to win as they sit at 15-1 odds. This will be a good golf tournament to watch because of all the top golf talent playing in it like most majors. Who is my choice this weekend? I will walk the course with Cameron Smith to win this weekend.
