No triple crown winner this year

Fat Guy Corner

The Preakness last Saturday ended all Triple Crown talk as Always Dreaming could not win the second leg of the Triple Crown. The winner was the two horse, Cloud Computing, who caught my choice, Classic Empire, in the stretch run. I have to admit I thought Classic Empire was going to be the winner after battling Always Dreaming for most of the horse race. However, Cloud Computing at 13-1 had other ideas, as he nudged out Classic Empire by a head. Cloud Computing became just the fourth horse in 34 years to win the Preakness after not running in the Kentucky Derby. The trainer, Chad Brown, picked up his first Triple Crown victory as a trainer. The record crowd of 140,320 was treated to a heck of a finish and a shocking winner in Cloud Computing. The question becomes, will Cloud Computing enter in the Belmont Stakes on June 10? I think it’s a 50/50 chance. I can totally assure you that we will not see Always Dreaming in the Belmont Stakes. I would not be shocked if Classic Empire skips the Belmont Stakes, too. The drama and hype of the Belmont will be very quiet and only true horse racing fans will be watching.

Preds into the Finals

The Nashville Predators have punched a ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Predators made ice chips out of the Anaheim Ducks in six games. One thing is for sure; the television ratings will not be great, but who cares. The Nashville Predators fans, and I, are happy for this franchise. Nashville will be rocking for the next two weeks, as Stanley Cup fever will be the theme. The Pittsburgh Penguins are up 3-2 and will win their series against the Ottawa Senators. I think the Penguins win the Stanley Cup, but I am rooting for the Nashville Predators. The predominant color will be yellow, as both teams wear yellow. How often do you see that? Not often! Go Predators!

Warriors are a solid choice

The NBA season has also come close to its finals, as the Golden State Warriors swept the injured San Antonio Spurs. It hurt me to see the San Antonio Spurs not at 100 percent. The Golden State Warriors are a solid 12-0 so far in the playoffs becoming the first team to accomplish that feat. Let’s throw in the fact that they are the first-ever to win three straight best-of-seven series 4-0.

I would say the Warriors look like the favorites to win it all! I am positive of one thing, too, the Warriors have not forgotten the fact that they lost a 3-1 series lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. It’s hard to grasp, but this really should be a Warriors attempt at three consecutive NBA World Championships. I have not watched much NBA Playoffs so far. However, I say order the pizza and some barley pops, as this NBA Finals will be a beauty between the Cavaliers and Warriors. The LeBron James mission against the Steph Curry mission. Who will take the rubber match of the NBA title here in 2017? I am leaning on the Warriors and the Fat Guy is happier than a dunked cookie in a tall glass of milk for the series to start!

Unhappy departure

How about this story surfacing regarding the Detroit Lions and Calvin Johnson? The story goes that the Lions are asking for some bonus money to be repaid. The reported number is $320,000. Can this organization learn nothing from the bitter Barry Sanders breakup and the rift it created between the two parties? Calvin stuck around on some horrible football teams and the lousy Lions are worried about $320,000 dollars? Why this organization does this dumb garbage keeps me shaking my head 24/7! Hey, Lions management, #320,000 is literally chump change to the organization. Don’t put a stake between you and the greatest wide receiver ever in a Lions uniform, one Calvin Johnson! Wake up, Detroit!

Window is closing on Tigers

The Detroit Tigers have completed roughly twenty five percent of their baseball season. The Tigers currently sit one game under .500. I remember back in the day one Sparky Anderson would say after 40 games it was usually a good indication of what type of baseball team you had for the summer. I think here in 2017 the Tigers are showing that the .500 mark is absolutely correct. I’ll be the first to say I hope I am wrong and the Detroit Tigers prove me wrong this summer. I just don’t see it and the window on the Detroit Tigers being at the top is closing fast. The only positive is I see is nobody running away with the American League Central here in 2017. I am curious if any of you Tiger fans think different? thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
