Nyquist moving on to the Preakness Stakes

Fat Guy Corner

The Fat Guy keeps his tremendous roll on Kentucky Derby selections going. I thought Nyquist was the best horse in the field at Churchill Downs in Saturday’s 142nd running of the race. I also thought Nyquist proved why he was the best horse as he won pretty handily over the other 19 horses. The horse, named after the Detroit Red Wing Gustav Nyquist, will now head to Baltimore and race in the Preakness. The Preakness will run in two weeks and I believe he will also win the Preakness.

Do I see a Triple Crown winner in back-to-back years? My large Fat Guy gut feeling is, no! I hope Nyquist can pull off the Triple Crown, but it will be a tough feat. I don’t think Nyquist can run the mile and a half at the Belmont, to be totally honest. I say, let the hype for the Preakness begin and let’s all hope Nyquist can win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

If you all are wondering, yes, I did polish off three Mint Juleps on Kentucky Derby Day!

Tigers looking just terrible

The Detroit Tigers are currently on a six-game losing streak and are looking terrible between the chalk lines. The Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers both swept Detroit. One has to wonder how much longer Brad Ausmus will be the Tigers’ skipper. The job Brad has done as a Detroit Tigers manager is terrible.

The Detroit Tigers have one of the highest payrolls in baseball. They were terrible last year and the season was swept under the rug as a bad year. I can actually accept that. However, what I can’t accept is watching the same show all over again in 2016. Detroit is at 14-16 and only ahead of the lowly Minnesota Twins in the standings. Detroit trails the Chicago White Sox by seven games and the Sox lead the division. Brad finally decided to take Justin Upton out of the two hole in the batting lineup 10 days ago! Good one, Brad. Everyone else figured it out two weeks into the season. I find it hard to believe, Brad, that you have an Ivy League education, to be honest. The base-running mistakes make Little League players cover their eyes! What did you guys do in Lakeland all spring? Play golf!

This Detroit team is tough to watch on a daily basis and I am frowning tired of it already! Let’s make the move now and fire Brad Ausmus ASAP! Brad apparently can’t bring out the best of these guys, so let somebody else do it! My Tiger rant is over but it probably won’t be the last one of the summer.

Cavaliers on a roll

The NBA playoffs have all moved on to the second round. The Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James are a solid 8-0. Cleveland has swept the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks. Is this the year the Cleveland Cavaliers and the city of Cleveland finally win a championship? LeBron James and his teammates have the look of a champion and are playing like it. Cleveland is healthy and is shooting lights out from the floor and especially from three-ball land. Cleveland will not even be challenged until the NBA Finals.

So, who will come out of the Western Conference? The three choices are Oklahoma City, San Antonio or Golden State. Let’s be fair, too. If Steph Curry is not healthy, the Golden State Warriors will have a tough time making the NBA Finals. I believe Golden State will win the Western Conference if he can play in the next series. I personally want a NBA Finals rematch of Cleveland and Golden State.

No longer lovable losers

The Chicago Cubs are on fire in the National League. Can the Cubbies finally go to the World Series here in 2016? I am pulling for them! The lovable losing Cubs are no longer lovable losers! I know the baseball season is a long grind but they are the chalk to win it all; make no mistake about that! It’s been a long time for all Cubs fans! thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
