Office supply stores merging

FLINT TWP. — Shoppers accustomed to buying back-to-school supplies at OfficeMax on Miller Road have to take a slight detour to the east this year.

After a merger with Office Depot stores, the Office Max store at 3650 Miller Road has closed and operations moved to the Office Depot store, 3445 Lennon Road.

The two stores announced a merger in November 2013 and said then that it planned to keep the Office Depot name.

Last year, Boca Raton, Floridabased Office Depot, Inc. announced plans to close approximately 400 stores in the United States over the next several years, according to a press statement from Julianne (Carelli) Embry, Senior Manager, Public Relations for Office Depot.

In 2014, Office Depot closed approximately 165 locations then an additional 100 in the second quarter of 2015.

As a result, the company closed the OfficeMax store #21 in Flint Township, on July 4.

“We will continue to serve our customers in the area through our Office Depot retail store nearby at 3445 Lennon Rd. or online at,” Embry said.

She did not disclose how many employees were impacted by the closing but said that severance packages were provided to eligible employees along with other company subsidized benefits. Where possible, efforts were made to assist employees in finding positions at neighboring stores, she said.

Talks are now in progress for a merger between Office Depot and Staples, which is the largest office supply retailer.

That deal could take place in about 45 days pending certification of documentation requested by the Federal Trade Commission, according to an August 28 press announcement.
