Officer’s resignation reduces staffing level

FLINT TWP. — Despite a recent hiring spate, it could be the first of the year before the township police force gets up to full strength.

A recent resignation of a probationary officer has dropped staffing levels back down to 36. The department is budgeted for 40 officers.

Four new probationary officers were sworn in on October 5 and are now undergoing field training.

Chief George Sippert has said he hopes to fill four remaining openings by early January, after the recent hires complete field training. Four new officers are about the maximum number that can be managed at one time by field training officers, he said.

At Chief Sippert’s request, the township board approved the resignation from an officer who was hired earlier this year on probationary status.

Chief Sippert said the officer, who he declined to name, was not passing the field-training program.
