“We should do this every year,” was an oft-uttered reaction to the first-ever drive-by Swartz Creek Class of 2020 Senior Clap Out on Friday, May 29. Hundreds of seniors and their families decorated vehicles and lined the streets to celebrate the culmination of 13 years of learning. The cavalcade of Dragons began at Kincaid Field (Hometown Days Field) and proceeded down Morrish Road to Maple and Crapo streets to the Middle School, around the school and up Fairchild Street to 1 Dragon Drive. Many of the well-wishers wore facemasks and did their best to abide by the social distancing guidelines put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the closure of schools in March, and the cancelation or postponement of senior milestones such as prom and commencements. School administrators have rescheduled the graduation ceremony to July 19. “We are planning for multiple scenarios,” said Superintendent Ben Mainka. “(We) will have a final answer (from the state) in a couple weeks.”
