— Play It Again Sports, 4230 Miller Rd., is expanding its reach in the county and beyond with the recent opening of a location inside Polar Palace, 3301 Davison Rd. in Lapeer. Owner Tom Rubin also is preparing for the store’s newest location inside Perani Arena & Event Center, 3501 Lapeer Rd. in Flint.
Rubin, who was been in retail for more than 20 years, said the store inside Perani will open mid- September. The fully-stocked store will carry merchandise for the Michigan Warriors, including apparel and equipment. The store also will sell tickets to Michigan Warriors games. “We’ll also cater directly to the team by carrying sticks, tape and offering sharpening,” Rubin said. “We’re basically taking over the pro shop.”
Play It Again Sports opened its location inside Polar Palace in February, and has been in business on Miller Rd. since November 2009. Rubin began his career in automotive sales, but always had a passion for sports. “I’ve always been active in sports, and it’s something I love to do,” he said. “It was a good fit.”
The most popular items at Play It Again Sports revolves around the sports seasons. “Last year, we did really well on skates and hockey equipment, snowboard and skis,” Rubin said. The spring brings a fever for everything baseball, and fitness equipment also is popular with customers.
Play It Again Sports offers good pricing on team and league items, including uniforms. “Our machines do all of the heat press and printing,” Rubin said. “We offer team, league, coach, play and club discounts.” The store also offers a money-back program to teams.
A recent tent sale at the Miller Rd. location generated sales, and also brought an added bonus. “People who drove by here all the time, but never knew we were here came saw the tent. We had a lot of new customers come into the store,” Rubin said. “
While making a profit is a key reason for having a store, Play It Again Sports also gives back to the community and those who support it.
“We give 10 percent of the sales back to the organization if the whole team comes in and buys their equipment from the store,” Rubin said. “We’re trying to build a customer for life. We’re here to help you, advise you and not push you. We want to be the people you turn to and we will do what we can. We’re all about sports and the kids.”
