Playoff baseball you bet!

Fat Guy Corner

The Major League Baseball playoffs have been outstanding so far. The excitement and drama come October is why playoff baseball reigns supreme in my eyes.

The first game between the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles was an instant classic. Kansas City wins it then wins game two in the ninth inning in dramatic fashion. The Royals take a 2-0 lead in the series and are headed back to Kansas City in tremendous shape to win this series. Game three will take place tonight (Tuesday) and if the Royals win this and go up 3-0 in the series, guess what Orioles? It will be time to put away gloves and bats for 2014. I personally think the Baltimore team will respond tonight and make this a series again. I will stick to my original thoughts and say Kansas City wins the series and goes to the World Series.

The National League series has been equally as good. The Giants and Cardinals in game two was another instant classic. The seventh, eighth, and ninth innings were drama times 10. There were bullpen mishaps and huge home runs by unlikely players. The Cardinals won the game and evened up the series 1-1. These two teams will play game three in San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon. I like the Giants to win this series. A Kansas City and San Francisco World Series? Who had that one in the beginning of the season? I know I didn’t. What is the irony of these two meeting in the World Series if it happens? They both won their respective one-game playoff! That is why the one-game playoff scenario is great for baseball. October baseball rocks! This just in: the Tigers’ bullpen blew another game! Oh they are not playing; my bad!

Winged Wheels

The Detroit Red Wings win their season opener at the “Joe” against Original Six foe, the Boston Bruins. I thought the Wings looked pretty good, actually. All these young kids on the roster should all have better seasons with the experience they acquired from playing last season. I thought Jimmy Howard looked solid between the pipes. The loss of Pavel Datsyuk with the shoulder injury hurts because of what Pavel brings to the ice every night. Detroit cannot afford too many injuries like last season if they expect to make a deep playoff run. It’s fun watching this hockey team grow up right in front of our eyes. I am looking forward to a great season of hockey in Hockeytown.

Marquee night

The college football scene has a huge football game on Saturday night. Notre Dame travels to Florida State in a battle of unbeatens. I really hope Notre Dame wins and you won’t see me write that too often.

This Florida State quarterback, Jameis Winston, is a clown and an embarrassment to his university. Florida State University and its handling of this latest autograph signing allegations for cash is a travesty. Georgia, which has a player involved named Todd Gurley, one of the best players in college football, suspended him from the team. A strong and bold move in my eyes. The Georgia Bulldogs handled it quickly and properly.

Jimbo Fisher, the coach of FSU, is a joke and so is the entire program. This Winston kid has been an issue of trouble the last year and a half. He has had rape allegations, stolen crab legs, the obscenity shouting incident, and now this! I hope Notre Dame pounds them into submission! If Florida State plays for a national title game it will be egg on the face of the NCAA! While on the subject, Notre Dame suspended five players this year for violations. Clap, clap, I applaud them for that, also. Let’s get a win for the Catholics over the quarterback criminal of FSU.

Limping along

The Detroit Lions get a nice road victory over the Minnesota Vikings. It wasn’t pretty, but for all the injuries Detroit has, Detroit will take it. The health of Calvin Johnson is hurting Detroit. The Lions need a healthy Calvin Johnson.
