Police call teenager’s death a suicide in response to public interest

BURTON –—The Burton Police Department issued a statement Dec. 28 regarding the Oct. 24 shooting death of a 17-year-old male.

The statement reads as follows: “On October 24, 2020 the Burton Police Department responded to a house on Packard regarding a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a juvenile male unresponsive. The juvenile was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“After interviews and the collection of evidence, it was determined that some occupants of the house were playing Russian roulette. The victim suffered a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

“During a search of the house, officers found several stolen items. It is believed that some of the occupants of the house are responsible for several burglaries and larcenies in the area. The stolen items were recovered, and some items have been returned to their owners.

“The detectives have submitted warrant packets to the prosecutor’s office for review on November 18, 2020.

“This is still an active case. No further information can be shared at this time.”
