Police officers grow beards to support local family

FLINT TWP. — Flint Township Police officers are trying out a new look to help a Flint Township family in need this holiday season.

Through Jan. 1, officers will be participating in the department’s first Beards for Kids as part of their continuing effort to strengthen and build relationships with the community. Male employees will be allowed to grow a beard or goatee, and female employees can have a streak of color in their hair for the month of December.

Police Chief Kevin Salter said at Monday’s Flint Township Board of Trustee’s meeting that more than twothirds of the department participated, donating $30 each and raising more than $1,170 for a family in need.

Salter also said the Flint Township Police Department received a $1,500 grant from Target to participate in Shop With a Hero. Fifteen employees of the police and fire departments each will take a child in need shopping with $100 to spend.
