FLINT TWP. — Township Police Sergeant Kevin Salter was sworn in Tuesday to the rank of lieutenant.
Salter’s promotion was approved Monday night by the township board.
Salter’s name was submitted by the Civil Service Commission as the next candidate eligible for promotion, said Police Chief George Sippert. He scored highest on a recently administered test for promotion to lieutenant.
Salter’s promotion fills an opening created in August 2015 by the retirement of Lt. Robert Battinkoff.
Lt. Salter has been an employee of the police department since 1999. He has served a variety of assignment including patrol officer, community policing officer, school resource officer, Flint Area Narcotics Group detective, road patrol supervisor and detective sergeant. Most recently he supervised the day to day operation of the investigation unit and also served as commander of the Incident Response Team.
Salter earned his bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from Ferris State University and recently graduated from the Northwestern University School of Staff and Command, Chief Sippert said. — Rhonda Sanders
