Police standoff ends peacefully

FLINT TWP. – On Wednesday, December 20 at about 4 p.m., Flint Township Police officers responded to a call in the 2100 block of W. Maple Ave. for a domestic disturbance in progress, according to a press release.

Officers arrived on scene and learned that the 30-year- old suspect had assaulted his father and mother. Following the assault, he retreated and barricaded himself in an unattached garage behind the residence. He was also believed to be in possession of guns and had previously made comments that he also had access to explosive devices and flammable liquids that he planned to use.

For the safety of nearby residents and the officers on scene, a perimeter was established and West Maple Ave. was closed to all traffic, including residents of an apartment complex. The suspect continued to make threatening statements to Genesee County 911 dispatchers. The Michigan State Police Emergency Services Unit was requested and responded with their negotiating team.

After approximately 6 hours, the man exited the garage and surrendered peacefully. He was later lodged at the Genesee County Jail pending formal charges. The case will be presented to the Genesee County Prosecutors Office for review.
