Amy Sanford and Gabrielle Miller sort school supplies in the pavilion at American Legion Post 294 in Clayton Township. Sanford organized a community supply drive – called Raise Up the Creek – on Saturday, Sept. 12, after learning that Swartz Creek Community Schools staff had agreed to take certain concessions in the event the district sees significant shortages in state revenue sharing this year. Because teachers often spend their own money on classroom supplies, Sanford felt it was only right for the community to pitch in. In addition to cleaning supplies, paper products, crayons, art supplies, notebooks, scissors, backpacks, folders, dry erase markers and other classroom necessities, area residents also donated about $400 in cash which Sanford will use to purchase items such as calculators and computer mice which are in short supply and cannot be shared among students due to the COVID safety guidelines.
