FLINT — The Terry Matlock School of Performing Arts Dance School is set to host a recital performance in celebration of owner Terry Matlock’s 50th year in the dance business. The landmark event is set for tomorrow, June 15, at The Whiting in Flint at 6:20 p.m. The two-hour recital will feature several alumni from the school, along with current students, to commemorate Matlock’s milestone.
“My school has trained thousands of dancers, both amateur and professional, over the last several decades, and many of them will return to join us for the evening,” said Matlock. “The recital will kick off with a slide show of things that have happened with the studio, how it’s grown, performances we’ve done, competitions we’ve won and places we’ve been. Then we’ll go right into the show.”
Matlock said she began her career at just 13 years old, teaching classes for 50 cents an hour in the basement of her home, and continued instructing and training as time went on, until she founded the School for the Performing Arts more than 35 years ago.
Classes at the Terry Matlock School of Performing Arts are offered for students as young as 2, and older dancers enjoy a number of classes. The school offers curriculum and options for those wanting to dance for fitness, recreation and for those that want to train seriously for a career in dance. A variety of programs and competition teams are offered to best fit students’ needs.
The Terry Matlock School of Performing Arts Dance School offers classes including ballet, entertainment, tap, jazz, lyrical and contemporary, hiphop for males and females, jazz, pom, acrobatics, cheer and gymnastics and a number of courses aimed at different age groups, as well as competitive dance.
“I believe that dance is an art form for everyone to enjoy,” said Matlock. “And this is not just a dance studio, this is a dance family. I truly believe that.”
