Retired detective charged with child porn



FLINT TWP. — Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton announced on November 17 that he has charged a retired City of Saginaw Police Detective with eight felony counts related to child pornography, according to a press release.

Brent David Vanderhaar, 51, of Flint Township, was arrested on the charges Tuesday afternoon by Michigan State Police as he was returning from a deer hunting trip in northern Michigan.

According to an investigation by the Michigan State Police, Vanderhaar had stopped at a McDonald’s restaurant/ Mobil gas station and convenience store in Kawkawlin Township in Bay County on Friday, November 6.

While there, he dropped three SD digital media cards that were later found by store employees. A manager viewed the images on the SD cards and they appeared to be images of a minor. The manager then reported this to police who began an investigation.

Based upon evidence obtained in the investigation, Vanderhaar was identified as a suspect and an arrest warrant was issued by Prosecutor Leyton.

Vanderhaar is charged with eight felony counts:

Count 1: Child Sexually Abusive Activity, a 20-year felony.

Count 2:Using a Computer to Commit a Crime that carries a penalty up to 20 years in prison; a 20-year felony.

Count 3: Capturing/Distributing Image of Unclothed Person, a 5-year felony.

Count 4:Using a Computer to Commit a Crime that carries a penalty between 4 and 10 years in prison; a 7-year felony.

Count 5: Capturing/Distributing Image of Unclothed Person, a 5-year felony.

Count 6:Using a Computer to Commit a Crime that carries a penalty between 4 and 10 years in prison; a 7-year felony

Count 7: Capturing/Distributing Image of Unclothed Person, a 5-year felony

Count 8:Using a Computer to Commit a Crime that carries a penalty between 4 and 10 years in prison; a 7-year felony

Vanderhaar was being held in custody in the Genesee County jail while awaiting arraignment in 67th District Court on Wednesday morning.
