Rocktober drama

Fat Guy’s Corner

October baseball drama has not been a disappointment here so far in 2013. The Tigers and Red Sox have played two one-run baseball games so far. The Tigs took game one 1-0 in an absolute nail-biting pitching performance by Anibal Sanchez and Jon Lester. The truth is, neither pitcher deserved to lose this ballgame. Game two looks like a Tiger victory, as Max Scherzer is striking out Red Sox players faster than I can eat chocolate cupcakes.

Detroit is up 5-0, then Max allows a run in the seventh and it’s a 5-1 Tiger lead. Jimmy “Brain Surgeon” Leyland turns over the ballgame to the bullpen. Yes, the shutdown, lockdown Tigers bullpen! Yeah, right! The Tigers bullpen couldn’t shut down the U.S. government!

Big Papi delivers the dramatic grand slam home run off Benoit and the game is tied, 5-5. Detroit loses in the bottom of the ninth and the whole state of Michigan goes to bed angry, mad and frustrated.

Detroit should be coming home to Comerica Park up 2-0 with tons of momentum, yet, it’s all tied up, 1-1. The Tigers’ two starting pitchers were absolutely lights out in games one and two. The question is, can the Tigers pick themselves back up off the mat after that devastating loss in game two? The answer to that question came yesterday after I wrote this when Justin Verlander took the mound on Tuesday. What will the series be by the time you read this article? I feel as though Detroit will take two of three at home against Boston. The Red Sox just do not look comfortable at the plate against the starting pitching of the Tigers. This means Detroit will have to win game six or seven in Fenway Park! If Detroit can do that, it will be World Series-bound again. Could it be a 1968 and 2006 rematch against the St. Louis Cardinals? Let’s all hope so. Detroit needs to dispose of Boston first. Boston may be Boston strong! However Detroit is Detroit TOUGH!

The Michigan Wolverines are no longer unbeaten, as Penn State hands them a four-overtime loss. It was pathetic football played by both sides. The truth is, neither team deserved to win. There were seven turnovers committed by the two teams. The kicker from Michigan choked big-time. Michigan falls from the Top 25, a spot it didn’t deserve to be in anyway. The Michigan Wolverines are not a good football team at all. They stink, to be quite honest. Michigan will host Indiana at the Big House on Saturday.

Sparty On!

The Michigan State football team is gaining momentum, I believe. A 42-28 victory over the Indiana team was impressive. Jeremy Langford’s four touchdowns led the way for Sparty. The Spartan defense is still a top-notch defense and can carry MSU when the offense sputters. The offense is getting better and better each week. MSU will entertain the awful Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday in East Lansing. MSU will steam roll the Purdue football team.

The Lions take down the “Mistake on the Lake” Cleveland Browns, 31-17. The Lions were pitiful in the first half of this game. The “Same Old Lions” was a term you could use. However, the second half was a totally different story when the Lions outscored the Brownies, 24-0. Six games into the schedule, Detroit is a solid 4-2 and half of its road games are now done. I thought a 3-3 record would be attainable and the Lions one-upped it! The Bengals and Cowboys now come to Ford Field in consecutive weeks. I can’t wait for the game Sunday; it will be my first one this year! The place will be rocking!!
