Salvation Army at 37% of goal with just days remaining

FLINT — The Salvation Army Red Kettles are filling up at a much slower pace this year, however; the need for our services by our community continues to escalate.

With October weather and temperatures in November, many are just now facing cold and in need of coats and assistance later than last year. Families that were able to live with no heat or water in the warmer weather, find themselves searching for help and shelter.

More than 1,000 Genesee County families applied for help last Christmas with toys, food and clothing through The Salvation Army. Coat vouchers were distributed so children could receive warm, winter coats necessary to walk to school. The need for assistance is greater this Christmas.

Funds raised through the 2015 Red Kettle Christmas campaign will help Genesee County families throughout the 2015/2016 year. Last year, the Salvation Army provided basic needs emergency financial assistance for over 2,900 residents-to help families keep their utilities turned on, as well as providing assistance to avoid homelessness by providing the financial support to help them remain in their homes without the worry of eviction or foreclosure.

Our food distribution program provided more than 11,700 food orders and 2,676 meals to children through our Kids Café.

“This year is more challenging to secure necessary available funds to help supply basic needs for our neighbors,” said Bill Goodwill, Genesee County Business Manager.

The Salvation Army is one of the most trusted human service organizations and is committed to “Doing the Most Good” with your contributions, time resources-$.85 of every dollar goes directly to programming/services. The Salvation Army needs your support to assist families during the coming year.

Please take a moment to bless others by placing coins and dollars into the kettles located around Genesee County or visit the Salvation Army on line at to make your donation. – G.G.
