Schools spend morning in secure mode, alert lifted

DAVISON — Several Davison Community Schools were placed in secure mode Feb. 3 morning after a traffic accident on M-15 in the city resulted in a man fleeing on foot into the surrounding neighborhoods.

The school announced the end of secure mode at 12:45 p.m.

Central Elementary, Davison Middle School, Hahn Intermediate School, Gates Elementary, Hill Elementary, Thomson Elementary, Davison High School and Davison Alternative Education were all placed in secure mode after police pulled over a motorist in the area of M-15 near the Subway and Burger King restaurants. The man fled on foot from the scene and was last seen heading north.

“Out of an abundance of caution, have been placed in secure mode,” said an email from the district to parents. “While our buildings are always locked and visitors need to be buzzed in, placing a building in secure mode means that no visitors are allowed inside the building.”

Because of these procedures designed to keep students and staff safe, GSRP preschool dismissal at Central Elementary was delayed a few minutes so the district could have extra security on site.

Deputy Chief Gerald Harris of the Davison Township Police said there was an accident in front of McDonald’s Wednesday morning and an occupant of one of the vehicles left the scene and walked away while police were running his identification.

Police determined while running a check on the man that he was a parole absconder. Witness told officers they thought they’d seen the suspect enter the Subway restaurant on M-15, but it turned out to be someone who fit the description.

Witnesses then told police they’d seen the man heading north toward the city of Davison, so Harris said a K-9 unit was brought in and tracked the suspect through Jack Abernathy Regional Park and Lake Callis before his tracks and scent were lost on Gale Road.

Harris said police believe he was picked up by someone on Gale Road and they are continuing to look for him.

During the search police decided to call for the schools to be locked down as a precaution. Secure mode was lifted at 1:43 p.m.
