FLINT TWP. — While driving along busy Miller or Linden roads, it is easy to spot new development. But one large building project off Dye Road is largely hidden from view.
The Woodlands, a substantial expansion of the Woodhaven Senior Community, has been quietly under construction for about a year. Tucked behind existing apartment homes in the complex, it is not visible from Dye road.
The township Planning Commission gave Woodhaven owners the green light for the project in May 2014. Plans call for a 12,000 square-foot clubhouse/ wellness center and 32 new club homes.
Construction is nearing completion on the Clubhouse which is scheduled to open to residents circa September 1, said Mark Hawkins, Woodhaven executive director. When completed it will have a grand hall, private dining room, a pub, activity work out area with exercise equipment, library, conference room, shower room, putting green, covered patio, massage room and space for an indoor aquatic pool and hot tub to be added in the future.
Construction is also well underway on the housing units. Five new units are completed and now occupied by residents and framing is being done on 18 more. Fall 2017 is the targeted completion date for all 32 units, Hawkins said. Woodhaven currently has 60 existing club homes and The Woodlands addition to its campus will bring the total number of club homes to 92 with 123 apartments.
“It’s important to note, that our entire campus is all on one level, there are no stairs, for our residents’ safety,” Hawkins said.
An existing building in the front of complex, known as the 5201 building, will remain a 73 apartment building.
The 5191 building will also remain as a 50-unit apartment building, he said.
Woodhaven announced plans for The Woodlands while celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014. The 40-acre property is zoned multi-family residential. The new development is being built on about nine of 17 vacant acres.
