FLINT TWP. — J & E Home Improvement Inc. on Dye Road is the winner bidder to make repairs to the wooden pavilion behind the township senior citizens center on Graham Road.

The township board selected J & E’s $4,170 bid over two others.

Township Supervisor Karyn Miller said J & E owner Jim Nelson has done previous work for the township.

The work will entail removing existing roof shingles and replacing bad sheathing, as needed. A new drip-edge will be installed as well as Certainteed shingles. The contract also calls for replacing damaged soffits and re-staining the entire pavilion including fascia, soffits, walls and posts.

Additional proposals to remove a garage door, install framing and siding and a new door was deleted from the project.

J & E also is responsible for clean-up and hauling away debris when the work is completed.

Trustee Barb Vert asked about the inclusion of ice and water shields on the roof which was not stated in the bid proposal.

Miller said she would make sure that work gets done.

The deteriorating condition of the roof was brought to the board’s attention back in August by Jim McClung, chairman of the township’s parks and recreation board and a member of the senior citizens’ advisory board.

McClung said then that the roof was getting so bad “you can stand underneath and look up at sky and see the sun.”

He asked that something be done to fix the problem before winter sets in.

The pavilion is used for a variety of outdoor events at the center including cookouts and book sales.
