Sexton to play golf at Mount St. Mary’s next season

FLINT — Flint Power’s Catholic’s women’s golfer Alexandra Sexton will play golf for Division 1 Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland next season.

Coach Kevin Farrell, former coach at Bowling Green State University offered Alexandra Sexton the opportunity to play golf in their Division 1 program. It was an easy decision for her because The Mount was already on her top ten list because of their academic rigor and faith-based teachings.

Less than two percent of high school athletes go on to play division 1 college sports. The Sexton family is no stranger to collegiate and professional sports. Her uncle, Dane Sexton played division 1 football for the Western Michigan Broncos in the 1990s. Her father, Chad Sexton umpired professional baseball and once called Ken Griffey Jr. out on strikes.

Allie got the call Wednesday, evening. She has helped lead her team to four straight Regional Championships and four State Championship appearances under the guidance of longtime coach Jim Snow.

Allie, the team captain, has had 10 or more Top 10 finishes and is a 4-year varsity letter winner. She works just as hard off the course as on the course. She has a 4.32 G.P.A., is president of the high school health organization HOSA, student government member and volunteers regularly at the local hospitals working with elderly patients.

She said she hopes to be a Doctor of Osteopathic medicine some day and thinks Mount St. Mary’s University is the perfect fit for her. — G.G.
