OWOSSO — The Shiawassee Arts Center (SAC), 206 Curwood Castle Dr., is offering several new classes for adults.
From 9 a.m.-noon March 5, 12 and 19, SAC offers Portrait Drawing in Charcoal with artist/instructor Marnie Fender. Materials, shading techniques and key concepts of anatomy and proportion will be covered during week one through discussion, examples and demonstration. Students will be drawing from direct observation during weeks two and three using a live model. Cost is $65 for members, $75 for nonmembers.
Sketchbook Pages for Botanical Art, a four-week class with artist/instructor Barb Holmer, runs 1-4 p.m. March 10- 31. Students will use colored pencils to make sketches and notations that provide a format for increasing observational skills while creating accurate references for future plant portraits. There is a small supply list. Cost is $65 for members, $75 for nonmembers.
Holmer also will teach a one-day workshop titled Surface Design on Fabric with Paint Sticks 1-5 p.m. April 9. Paint sticks will be used in this class to print stencils and rubbings from ‘found’ objects. Participants can bring an array of fabrics in both dark and light colors and see how much fun it is to create designs with this easy to use medium. Cost is $25 for members, $30 for nonmembers. There is a $5 material fee to the instructor for use of paint sticks.
Artist/instructor Cindy Evans of Williamston will teach Watermedia Workshop — the Creative Approach 2- 4 p.m. March 16-April 27. This watermedia workshop will begin with a process of initial creative beginnings, having fun with free exploration using basic principles of design and composition. The goal will be to broaden the artist use of creative techniques, adding personal expression, feeling and life when creating works of art. The supply list is available, and there will be no class on April 6. Cost is $120 for members, $140 for nonmembers.
From April 7-May 12, instructor Jim Reinert will teach Earth, Water & Fire Pottery for beginning to intermediate levels. Various techniques of wheel throwing, hand building and glazing will be taught. Participants need to bring their tools, a notebook, disposable gloves and an old towel. An apron is optional. Cost is $130 for members, $150 for nonmembers and includes 25 pounds of clay, glazes and firings. In every bag of clay, there is a pot.
Acrylic painter Tonya Henderson Rollyson will teach Acrylic Techniques 6-8:30 p.m. March 2-23. The class is student level: adult-young adult, and for those new to painting, new to acrylics, or just wanting some guidance on paintings. Students need to supply their own materials (supply list is included). Cost is $110 for members, $130 for nonmembers.
The last offering is a watercolor/watermedia workshop 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 4-6 with Helga Flower. Titled “Loosen Up with Confidence,” the class focuses on creative exploration of the participants’ favorite subject. Flower, a native of Munich, Germany, will be demonstrating, critiquing work and giving individual attention and guidance to the students. Flower maintains her homes and studios in Sault Ste. Marie and Clewiston, Fla. She teaches watercolor and mixed-media workshops all over the U.S. and abroad. She is a sought after juror and guest speaker in many art related events. There is a discount for early registration prior to June 1. Registered participants will receive a supply list. Cost is $155 for members before June 1 and $170 after June 1.
