GENESEE COUNTY —Six Genesee County High School Seniors were recently awarded scholarships, from the Genesee County Association of School Board Members (GCASBM).
To be considered for these scholarships, students must have senior standing, attained at least a 2.5 high school grade point average, and completed a substantial amount of community volunteer service through a school program or other recognized community agency. The students also had to submit an application form, along with an essay describing their academic and/ or vocational goals and the value of community service.
The recipients were:
Mackenzie Ford – Bendle High School
Mackenzie has a 4.0 GPA she is a member of the Bendle High School National Honor Society, Service Learning, Student Council, and varsity basketball mentoring. She is on the volleyball, basketball, and is captain of the track team.
Cionna Orr – Carman-Ainsworth High School
Cionna has a 4.0 GPA and is the Executive Board president of Student Council; she is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society for High School Scholars. Additionally, Cionna is a member of Quiz Bowl, the Symphony Band, Students for Christ, the Debate Team, 21 Club, and the Model U.N.
Kyle Rau – Flushing Senior High School
Kyle has a 3.986 GPA and is the treasurer for Student Council; he is also a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society. He is involved in the Rotary Interact Club, Against Bullying Club, and Key Club. Additionally, Kyle has volunteere
Gabriella Perozo – Goodrich High School
Gabriella has a 4.0 GPA and is the President of Student Council as well as a chapter member of the National Honor Society. She attended Harvard University’s summer program in 2013 and is a student liaison for the Board of Education.
Amanda Kirkwood – Kearsley High School
Amanda has a 3.569 GPA and has been president of Student Council for the last three years. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award, Outstanding Attendance Award, Future Leader Award, and Student of the Year. Amanda is currently a volunteer a
Cameron Walker – Lake Fenton High School
Cameron has a 3.992 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Cameron has dedicated time to his community through performing community service with Hurricane Sandy Relief, Flint City Rehabilitation Project, and he has coordinated Lake Fenton High School’s blood drive for the past two years.
The mission of the GCASBM is to provide Board Member training to promote effective leadership, continuous improvement in Public School governance, and to make a positive difference in Public Education. — G.G.
