Spartans prove they wanted the win

Fat Guy Corner

The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans hooked up in a classic football game last Saturday.

Yes, I am eating a little crow from my Spartan friends currently. However, I wear big boy pants and I paid my debts of wagers and took the smack talk that I deserved.

Michigan folded, once again, under Jim Harbaugh in a game they lead by 16 points. The Michigan State Spartans took it to the Wolverines in the second half and came out victorious 37-33.

The running of Michigan State back Kenneth Walker III was nothing short of spectacular. He accounted for five touchdowns and 197 yards rushing on 23 carries. I am not very smart but that equals 8.5 yards a carry roughly. He should have himself in the Heisman Trophy discussion, in my opinion, and be the front runner.

The funny thing about football is Michigan dominated the stat sheet in third down conversions and total yards etc … yet still found a way to lose the football game. Jim Harbaugh and his team loses yet another huge game and I ask, “when will it end at Michigan?”

The fact is, Michigan State won the football game as they wanted it more than the Michigan team did. How do you squander a 16-point lead against your rival with the entire season on the line? I am sure it is a question Michigan fans will wonder until next season.

The Michigan State Spartans, on the other hand, stay undefeated and control their own destiny. If Sparty runs the table, they will be in the college football playoffs. I also want to say, what a job Mel Tucker has done since becoming the MSU head football coach. Let’s hope the Spartans do not overlook Purdue this weekend after that emotional victory over Michigan. The Spartans will need to be focused to move to 9-0 as Purdue is no three-foot gimme.

The Wolverines will take on Indiana in a who-cares game. The Wolverine season is officially burnt toast!

The couch, the couch, the couch is on fire! Sparty on!

The official college football playoff rankings will be out this week and the controversy will begin. The only given is Georgia will be No. 1. If I was ranking them it would be Georgia 1, Alabama 2, Ohio State 3 and Michigan State 4.

The World Series has Atlanta up 3-2 with game six tonight (Tuesday, deadline day) in Houston. The Astros were down 3-1 but a win Sunday night keeps their World Series hopes alive. I would not be shocked if the Houston ball club wins two straight in Houston. I find myself pulling for the Braves, though, and hope they find a way to beat the “Garbage Can” clappers.

I have enjoyed watching this World Series and have pretty much watched every inning of it. I hope the last one or two games are good ones. I say come on “Tomahawk Chop” win a game in Houston.

The NFL trade deadline is today (Tuesday, deadline day) at 4 p.m. The biggest news so far is the Rams have traded for Von Miller from the Denver Broncos. One could say the Rams are in a Texas Hold’em poker game and have pushed all their chips in to win the Super Bowl this season. The Rams gave up some draft picks in 2022 and picked up the majority of his $9.7 million salary. I love the move by the Rams. I like when teams have a shot at winning and they go for it. Von Miller is an old veteran of 11 years in the NFL, who can still play and is a difference maker. I am rooting for my man Matthew Stafford to win a Super Bowl.

I will make this brief. Last Sunday’s performance by the Detroit Lions was a slap in the face to Lions fans. We know you stink, however, we would like to see effort on the football field in front of your own fans!

My NFL picks suffered last week for the first time … We will right the ship this week.
