C-A grads competing collegiately in football

MURFREESBUROUGH, NC. — With the 2013 season scheduled to start on Sept. 7 with a non-league contest at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Chowan University football team will be hoping to get some key contributions from Carman-Ainsworth products Cameron Stover and Devon Simpson.

As a sophomore in 2012, Stover completed 182-of-299 pass attempts for 2,358 yards with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions for the Hawks, 6-4 overall, 5-2 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 6-foot-3, 190 lb. quarterback also ran the ball 82 times for 161 yards and four touchdowns over the course of the 10 games he played in. As for Simpson, who stands in at 6-foot-2, 225 lbs., he was only on the field for five games at linebacker for Chowan last season and racked up eight solo tackles and two assists. — M.S.

Lapeer County Hockey taking registrations for 2013-14

LAPEER — The Lapeer County Hockey Association is currently taking registrations for the fall season of 2013-14. Evaluation skates will take place August 20-22 at the Polar Palace. Registration can take place at the arena or on the arena’s website. Details: polarpalace.com. — B.P.

Campground on Holloway Reservoir open until Sept. 3

COLUMBIAVILLE — Located at 7698 N. Baxter Rd., Wolverine Campground is located on the north shore of the Holloway Reservoir and is open until September 3. There is a $5 non-refundable reservation fee, cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance of the 3 p.m. check in time and all fees must be paid in full with advanced registration. Crossroads Village hosting Huckleberry Weekend

FLINT — Crossroads Village, 6140 Bray Rd., is hosting Huckleberry Weekend on August 10 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Activities will include games, pony rides for kids under 80 pounds and more.
