Bobby Crim donates $1 million for scholarships

FLINT Bobby Crim continues to give back to the running community. After the statue of his likeness was unveiled at the Crim Fitness Foundation Crim Festival of Races start line last Thursday, Crim announced a $1 million donation that will be split into two $500,000 scholarship packages—one for the U-M Flint and the other for the Crim to use to further its running programs. Crim stipulated that the money be split evenly between both organizations, with the Crim Fitness Foundation receiving yearly installments of $50,000 over 10 years. The $500,000 to U-M Flint is to be spent on funding scholarships for students. Crim, 82, earmarked the two recipients as key to giving him what he needed to start the Crim Race. Crim, earned a bachelor’s degree, and later honorary law degree, from UM-Flint, and spent nearly two decades in the Michigan House of Representatives. He served as Speaker of the House from 1975-1982, and was instrumental in helping pass legislation benefitting teachers and educators.

Crim launched his first Bobby Crim Road Race in 1977 with his administrative assistant, Lois Craig, as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Michigan. Last Saturday marked the 38th running of the Crim 10 mile race. — L.P.
