Michigan Warriors spread holiday cheer

FLINT — On Dec. 17, the Michigan Warriors had the privilege of visiting the Whaley Children’s Center. Players passed out teddy bears, played Jenga, played basketball, raced, and just talked with the kids as part of a community service effort for the holidays.

Currently, Whaley Children’s Center provides shelter, hope, and healing to nearly 90 children each year who are survivors of horrific abuse and neglect. Through an intense treatment process provided by qualified and dedicated staff, children are taught the skills necessary to thrive in life as well as given strategies to cope with their past and press on to greater futures.

UM-Flint hockey heads into break on solid ground

BURTON — The U-M Flint Men’s’ Hockey Club heads into the winter break with an impressive 14-5-0 mark.

On the team’s web site, key factors to the team’s early-season success include deep offensive firepower and textbook defense. In the second ranking period U-M Flint jumped from the ninth spot to the eighth based on a relentless effort, winning nine of its last 10 games.

Senior forward and biology major – pre-dental, Jake Brejnak (4G, 9A, 6PIM) said, “Despite being prone to illness and injury, we’ve proven that we can put a competitive effort on the ice every game. Team chemistry is great both on and off the ice. We are looking forward to a fun and successful second semester.”

Brejnak is a crucial piece to the Wolverines’ lineup, notoriously known for his leadership by action and willingness to shot block in any situation.

Wolverines’ freshman goaltender and business Major Adam Bryant boasts a 10-1-0 record, 3 shutouts and a .921 save percentage in his first semester of college hockey. Current scoring leaders include local grads Nate Robson of Lapeer (19 GP, 17 G, 11A, 28 points), Mark Look (19 GP, 15G, 10A, 25 points) and Cody Damon of Grand Blanc (15GP, 13G, 11A, 24 points).

U-M Flint will start the second half of its season at its home rink, Crystal Fieldhouse, hosting Grand Valley State University (14-6- 2-1) on Friday Jan. 9 for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. — L.P.

Youth basketball camp, league on tap

DAVISON — The catholic community of St. John & Blessed Sacrament will be holding a youth basketball camp on Jan. 10 and a seven-week youth hoops’ league beginning on Jan. 17. The camp is intended for kindergarteners through third graders and will take place at St. John Family Center at 505 N Dayton St. in Davison. Wings, Generals alumni to meet

FLINT — The Detroit Red Wings Alumni will face off against the Flint Generals Alumni on Feb. 20 at Perani Arena. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. VIP tickets cost $30 and include exclusive access to the Blue Line Club with private cash bar and complimentary snacks, overlooking the ice surface. —— D.N.
