Tickets now on sale for new OHL team
FLINT – With the recent announcement that the OHL approved the transfer of ownership and relocation of the Plymouth Whalers Hockey Club to Flint, Genesee County will, once again, be home to some of the best hockey in the region.
“Hockey has long been a part of the Flint community, having the opportunity to bring the storied Ontario Hockey League to the area is incredibly exciting,” said Rolf Nilsen, owner of the Perani Arena & Events Center and Flint’s new OHL team. “We’re looking forward to bringing NHL development hockey to the region and, more importantly, making valuable contributions to the community.”
Individual ticket prices for the yet-unnamed Flint team for the 2015-16 OHL regular season will be $12, $15 and $19, with $2 discounts offered for groups, youth, students, seniors and military.
Full season tickets are avilable now and early bird pricing ($2 off) will be offered through April 30. Ticket packages for the 34 home games will range from $340-$578.
Season ticket benefits include but are not limited to: discounted pricing, special ticket redemption nights, discounted parking passes and first rights for OHL playoff seating, arena concerts and family shows.
Tickets can be purchased by calling or visiting the Perani Arena Box Office. There will be select-a-seat events offered at later dates. Fans can also make an appointment to select their seats by e-mailing Susana Wight at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The majority of Flint’s OHL home games will be played on Friday and Saturday nights with likely start times of 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Ontario Hockey League is comprised of 20 member teams, 17 in Ontario, and three in the United States, and is the No. 1 development league in the world for players to the National Hockey League.
The Flint team is expected to play four home games against Saginaw and Windsor and three versus each of their other division rivals – Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie. Visit www.ontariohockeyleague.com for more information. – K.W.
LANSING — Spring rules meetings for coaches and officials are being held now until April 9. Varsity coaches in soccer, boys lacrosse, softball and baseball must attend an in-person or online rules meeting in order to be able to coach in the MHSAA postseason tournament in their sport. Meetings for golf, girls lacrosse, tennis and track and field go online next week. All coaches — assistant or head coach or paid volunteer — must attend a meeting or take an online rules and health/ safety meeting. A meeting takes less than an hour to complete online and coaches have two months to get it done. — K.W.
Volleyball club registration
FENTON — Registration is ongoing for the Genesee Area Volleyball Club. The AAU club is for girls age 12-17. The season runs from Feb. 26-June 1. Practices will be held at Lake Fenton, Mason Elementary and Grand Blanc West Middle School. There will be two practices each week and four to six tournaments held on Saturday or Sunday. Card show scheduled
LAPEER – A sports card, NASCAR die-cast cars and toy show will be held Sunday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the American Legion Post No. 16, 1701 W. Genesee St., Lapeer. Eight-foot tables cost $25, and any donations will be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and needy families in the area. A concession stand will be available.
