Gus Macker coming

GRAND RAPIDS — The annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament will invade Grand Rapids this year on the campus of Kenowa Hills High Schools June 6-7.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for the tournament, which began 42 years ago when Mitch and Scott McNeal held the first tournament in their driveway in Lowell. The inaugural tournament was made up of 18 players.

The 2015 Tour has a total of 43 events spanning 13 states. Players who want to play can go to for more information and to register for any of the 43 tournaments.

Grand Rapids was the location of Gus Macker company headquarters for six years in the 1990s. Macker tournaments have been played in Grand Rapids 23 times in the last 25 years.

Macker tournaments had a long run in Grand Rapids in large part due to the relationship that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for Grand Rapids Public School athletics for 22 years. The funds, including $235,000 raised for the 1999 Grand Macker, primarily helped athletes with play-to-play costs.

The most recent Macker in the Grand Rapids area was in 2013. It raised funds to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for local schools. AEDs are portable devices used to treat potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.
