Olympic hopefuls to mentor at local swim clinic

OXFORD — Aqua Swim Club of Oxford – home to world-class athletes – will host another ProSwimClinic on Saturday, Aug. 29, with special guests and Olympic hopefuls, Giles Smith and Kevin Cordes.

The duo is teaming up with Aqua Club’s very own two-time Olympic swimmer, Nimrod Shapira. Shapira, representing Israel at both the 2012 and 2008 Olympic Games, is also the founder of AquaClub, and spends much of his time coaching AquaClub’s competitive team.

The event is open to children of all ages and swim levels. Cost: $99. Check-in 7:30 a.m. at the Oxford High School Natatorium. The event will include a two-hour swim clinic. The day will include a special presentation by Giles Smith, along with an afternoon full of friendly competition, encouragement and support during a Sprint Challenge. Youth sporting clays shoot

GRAND BLANC – Pheasants Forever Genesee County Chapter (PFGCC) is offering a free youth sporting clay shoot on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Grand Blanc Huntsman’s Club, 9046 Irish Rd. Registration is at noon, a safety talk follows at 12:30 p.m. and a shotgun start begins the competition at 1 p.m. Awards and lunch immediately after. Open to kids ages 18 and under. The shoot is funded by the PFGCC and includes one round of sporting clays with 50 targets, ammunition is provided, awards, door prizes and refreshments included. Firebird coach’s show

FLINT – The inaugural season of “The Flint Firebirds Hockey Coach’s Show” debuted Tuesday night across Mid-Michigan on 1330 WTRX Sports Radio with head coach John Gruden and host Dominic Hennig. “The Flint Firebirds Coach’s Show” presented by Perani’s Hockey World, is set to aired from 6-7 p.m. The weekly call-in program will also be carried live around the world online on and the iHeartRadio App via the WTRX radio channel.

Flint Firebirds radio play-by-play broadcaster Dominic Hennig said: “The Flint Firebirds Coach’s Show” provides our fans another opportunity for an inside look at what is happening with the club on a week-to-week basis. It also gives Firebirds fans the ability to talk with coach Gruden and ask questions to learn about the team and the Ontario Hockey League.”

The one-hour, call-in program will take place live from the Cumulus Broadcasting studios every Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. from late August through the conclusion of the Firebirds Hockey season and fans will have the ability to interact live over the radio with Gruden and Hennig by calling the phone line at (810) 251-1570 or emailing The August 23 show featured an in-depth look at the background of Gruden and how he became the first head coach of the Flint Firebirds. In addition, coach Gruden and Hennig will preview the upcoming blue vs. white intrasquad exhibition game that will take place at the Polar Palace Arena in Lapeer on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
