Basketball tryouts on the horizon

AREAWIDE— Tryouts will be held for the fifth grade/11 and under Elite AAU travel basketball team. Great Pumpkin 5K set for Oct. 8

DAVISON — The Davison Educational Foundation will hold its annual Great Pumpkin 5K Run/Walk on Oct. 8. A Kids’ Fun Run is also scheduled. Participants can register online or the morning of the race from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Cardinal Stadium. The 5K Run will begin at 9:15 a.m., with the walkers stepping off at 9:16 a.m. A fun run for children 9 and under will be held at 10:15 a.m. at the Cardinal Stadium track. The cost is $17 without shirt, $20 with shirt or $25 with long sleeve shirt for those who register by midnight Thursday, Oct. 6. The cost is $25 for those who register on Race Day and shirts will be subject to availability. The cost for the Kids’ Fun Run is $5 and that includes a T-shirt. Timing and results will be provided by Race Services Company using the ChronoTrack Systems Bib Tag. Results will be posted continuously during the event for review. Shooters earn state honors

MASON — On July 2, more than 200 shooters from across Michigan, ages nine to 23, took part in the Amateur Trap Association Michigan State AIM (Academics – Integrity – Marksmanship) shoot held at the Michigan Trap Association grounds. A five-member graduate team from Durand Sportsman’s Association Competitive Shooter’s program placed first receiving gold medals. The Graduate team included squad leader, John Adams of Durand, Erin Danhausen of Swartz Creek, Jordan Ocenasek of Durand, Nick Krasny of Grand Blanc and Lance Adams a junior at Byron High School. John Adams also earned an individual trophy for taking high graduate shooter with Erin Danhausen earning an individual trophy for high Junior shooter. The team also placed second in the Central Zone in May with John Adams taking third place. Danhausen is one of two females selected this year for the Junior Olympic Development team. Leftover wild turkey licenses on sale now

STATEWIDE — The Dept. of Natural Resources reminds hunters that fall turkey hunting license drawing results and leftover license quantities are available at Remaining fall turkey hunting licenses went on sale Aug. 29 and may be purchased by any hunter, including those that did not apply for a fall turkey license. A hunter may buy one license per day until the quotas are met. As of Aug. 21, there are licenses available in fall turkey management units L, M, W, HA (private land) and YY (private land). The majority of the licenses are available in unit YY (45,000 licenses) for private land in southern Michigan and Beaver Island. More than 800 leftover licenses are available in Unit M. Fall turkey season opens Sept. 15 and runs through Nov. 14. “Fall turkey season provides a great opportunity for hunters to get a bird for their Thanksgiving dinner,” said DNR upland bird biologist Al Stewart. “And because the season runs through Nov. 14, it gives archery deer hunters the chance to pursue another game animal during the archery deer season.” Hunters have an additional opportunity to get a fall turkey license by applying for the 2012 Pure Michigan Hunt drawing. Each application is $4 and you may apply as many times as you like. Three lucky winners will receive a hunt package that includes a fall turkey, spring turkey, elk, bear, antlerless deer license and a reserved waterfowl hunt. Carman-Ainsworth Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet

FLINT — Mark the date for Saturday, October 29 to honor the inductees for the newest class of the Carman-Ainsworth Athletic Hall of Fame. Registration open for 33rd Annual Championships

KENOSHA, WISC. — Top high school cross country runners from more than 13 states will compete in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional in hopes of becoming a National Finalist. The Championship, that takes place at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday, Nov. 26, is the longest running cross country race in the nation, comprised of four regional 5K races across the country. The Northeast (Kings Park, N.Y.) and South (Charlotte, N.C.) regional races will also be held on Nov. 26. The West Regional (Walnut, Calif.) race will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3. More than 10,000 of the nation’s leading high school runners are expected to compete in the regional meets. The top ten finishers from each seeded regional
