Super Shootout on the ticket

CLIO — Racing fans will want to mark their calendars for the Must See Racing Super Shootout Friday, Aug. 24 at Auto City Speedway in Clio. The V-8 Figure eights, which have never been in Michigan before, the super modifieds and regular modifieds will be on the schedule. Adult tickets are $22 and kids 12-and-under are free. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. — L.P.

36th Crim Festival of Races approaches

FLINT — The international Crim Festival of Races hits the bricks in downtown Flint on Aug. 25 with a cap of 17,000 runners. The race is the fourth largest in the country and this year, the Crim welcomes Deena Kastor, one of the best U.S. women’s racers. Runners this year will receive a New Balance Technical T-shirt and Genesee County residents will receive a $5 discount off their entry fee if registering on line.

The Shelter of Flint returns with The Crim Pasta Party on Friday, Aug. 24. The party provides a carb-packed pasta dinner for racers, family members and the general public, the night before the races. Funds raised support Shelter of Flint. The party takes place at Kearsley and Saginaw and runs 4-8 p.m. Cost is $10 adults, $5 kids, under six eats for free.

Special guest Willie Horton, a member of the Detroit Tigers 1968 World Series Championship team will be on hand along with Kastor. Details: www.crim.org. — L.P.

40th annual golf tourney on tap

JACKSON — The 40th Michigan State Junior Boys’ Golf Championship will take place today at Forest Akers East and West courses. The 36-hole championship is open to any Michigan junior boy who has a USGA Handicap Index of 6 or less and is between the ages of 13 and 17. Eighteen year olds can participate if they graduated from high school this past year. The entry deadline is Aug. 17 and defending champion, Zack Bialik of Manistee, returns to defend his title. Local talent travels to play in tourney

CHICAGO, IL — The Michigan Hawks 13U girls soccer team competed at the Eclipse Select Challenge Cup from Aug. 10-12, beating Texas Sting, 6-1, Illinois United FC, 7-0, and the New Jersey Crush, 5-0, to earn a spot in the tournament quarterfinals. From there the Hawks went on to defeat the Dallas Texans, 3-0, and Missouri SLSG Elite, 4-0, before coming from behind to edge out New York World Class FC, 3-2, in the finals. Area players on the Michigan roster include Grand Blanc’s Madison Smith and Burton’s Gabby Pudvay. – M.S.

Area squad falls just short

FLINT — After starting their initial year in the Great Lakes Football League with a 25-8 pre-season win over the South-East Michigan Mercenaries before winning their first three regular season games, the Flint Fury ended 2012 on Aug. 12 with a 2-0 forfeit win against the Oakland County Playmakers. This left Flint with a record of 6-4 in the GLFL and 7-4 overall, which was just short of where the squad needed to finish in order to qualify for the playoffs. — M.S.

Minor League football still alive

DETROIT — With 355 points allowed and 118 scored, the Flint Rampage of the Great Lakes Football League recently ended 2012 on Aug. 11 with a 46-8 loss at the Detroit Diesels, which came on the heels of a 56-8 defeat at the hands of the West Michigan Force just one week prior. This left the Rampage with a record of 2-8 for 2012. Highlights for Flint this year include victories 42-28 over the Oakland County Playmakers and 22-14 against the Motor City Soldiers on July 21 and 28, respectively. Next up for the Rampage is the GLFL All Star Game on Sept. 22 at Fenton High School at 7 p.m. — M.S.

EAST LANSING — Beginning tomorrow Lapeer native Rob Rubick and Mickey York will once again host the 30-minute highlight show known as MHSAA Football Friday Overtime, which airs at midnight on FOX Sports Detroit. The show is scheduled to run for 13-straight weeks. — M.S.
