Sweet redemption

Fat Guy’s Corner

The last of the four golf majors, the PGA Championship, was played over the weekend. Jason Dufner took home the Wanamaker Trophy for his first major win as a professional golfer. How can you not root for Jason Dufner? Dufner lost a heartbreaker two years ago in the PGA Championship to his friend, Keegan Bradley. Jason made sure Jeff Day — it didn’t happen this time around by defeating Jim Furyk by two strokes. Dufner, who shot a 63 in round two, made sure he didn’t fold this time around.

Jason Dufner is so non-emotional on the golf course. I like his attitude out there on the links. Never does he get too high or too low emotionally. I think it’s refreshing to see, actually. I am a Jason Dufner fan and will root for him every week while he is on tour.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had absolutely horrible weekends on the golf course. Tiger will now have to wait until the Masters in his quest for another major golf tournament victory. Jack Nicklaus’ record keeps getting safer and safer, in my opinion.

Gearhead drama

The NASCAR boys return to Michigan at MIS this weekend. Tony Stewart fans will not see him this weekend, as Austin Dillon will be in Tony’s seat in the car. On Aug. 5, Tony broke his tibia and fibula in an accident on the race track. It looks like good weather for Sunday’s race. All of you gearheads, party it up and root for your favorite redneck driver. I will be rooting for my man Jeff Gordon or whoever I draw in my NASCAR pool. I have had Jimmie Johnson the last two weeks. Thanks for nothing, Jimmie Johnson!

Motor City Kitties

The Detroit Tigers opened up a nice lead in the American League Central Division. The awesome four-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians last week has set the table for the Tigs. There is nobody in the division who can catch them now. I don’t care how hot the Kansas City Royals are right now.

I enjoyed my trip last week to see Justin Verlander pitch against the Tribe. There were quite a few Tigers’ fans in attendance. I never figured the Tigers would sweep Cleveland!

When you look back on the 2013 season, this series will be the defining series of the summer. It’s now all about October for the Detroit Tigers. How far will they rock into Rocktober? It’s World Series or bust for me. I will say, Justin Verlander needs to get his act together on the mound. Detroit needs him come October to advance to the World Series.

Lions’ roar

The Lions opened up the exhibition season with a victory over the New York Jets. How about the pick six by number-one draft pick Ziggy? Yes, Ziggy took a Mark Sanchez screen pass and took it to the house! A nice first game for the young rookie. The main man, Calvin Johnson, caught three passes from Matthew Stafford before exiting the football game. He looks ready for the NFL opener.

Reggie Bush hurdled a defender with a highlight-reel hurdle. I am so excited to see what Reggie brings to the table as a Detroit Lion this season. I believe he will have a huge impact on the Lions’ offense here in 2013. We shall see if I am right or not. The Lions will head to Cleveland on Thursday night to take on the Brownies. I wish I could go, but I can’t make it to Cleveland for this football game. I think both of these two teams are heading in the right direction and should have improved records here in 2013.

How about Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay ripping his team and coaches after pre-season game number one? I love it and more owners need to call out their teams and coaching staffs! I love it! thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
