FLINT TWP. —Talbots upscale women’s clothing store will close its Genesee Valley Center store this weekend.
Signs posted in the store last Saturday announced the last seven days of business for the long-time mall store known for its high-quality, classic women’s apparel.
The store opened at Genesee Valley Center in July 1995, according to Deanna Tito, investor relations analyst for Mass.- based Talbots.
The store relocated to the mall’s new Outdoor Village wing in May 2007, near two of its main competitors — the Coldwater Creek and Chico’s women’s clothing stores. As of last weekend, Talbots remaining merchandise was marked 70-85 percent off as fixtures and inventory were being liquidated.
“As part of our previously announced plans to reduce Talbots store base and square footage, we will be closing our Flint store on or about March 24th,” Tito said. Customers will be able to continue to shop with Talbots at its Rochester Hills location, or Auburn Hills outlet store or at Talbots.com, she said.
She did not disclose how many employees are impacted by the closing.
Talbots announced streamlining plans in Dec. 2011 targeting closure of about 112 stores, including 15 to 20 consolidations, by 2013, according to a company press release.
About 83 locations, including consolidations, were closed in fiscal 2011, approximately 25 locations are targeted for closure in fiscal 2012 and approximately two locations are planned to close in fiscal 2013.
Closed stores and those slated for closing contributed about $17.9 million in sales and $6.0 million in operating loss in the third quarter of 2011, according to the press statement.
