Teen killed in early morning pedestrian/ train accident

DAVISON — A 17-year-old man died early Sunday from injuries sustained when he was struck by a train while attempting to cross the railroad tracks near Main Street.

The accident happened May 31 at approximately 4:16 a.m., Davison City Police along with the Davison Township and Richfield Township Police Departments and the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call of a personal injury accident involving a pedestrian who was struck by a train. CN Railroad Police also responded and assisted at the scene of the accident.

According to Davison Police Chief Don Harris, a police investigation showed Gage Elkins, 17, of Davison was attempting to cross the railroad track near Main Street in downtown Davison on foot when he was struck by oncoming westbound CN train.

Elkins was with his 15-year-old friend, and they were walking back to Elkins’ residence. He was transported to Hurley Medical Center, where he later passed away from his serious injuries.

The 15-year-old was not injured.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this 17-year-old male and the crew of the CN train,” said Harris in a statement accompanying the press release, Sunday.

Several railroad crossings in the Davison area were blocked by the stopped train on the tracks for approximately an hour and a half during the investigation.
