SWARTZ CREEK — Looking for a creative outlet and people who share a passion for all things beaded? Look no further than the Genesee Area Bead Society, a group that meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at First Baptist Church of Swartz Creek, 5372 Seymour Rd.

“We’re going into our fifth year,” said President Linda Wernette. “We have members from all over Genesee County with the farthest coming from Otisville. Altogether, there are more than 60 members.”

The bead society has a rotating schedule of speakers, classes, events and demonstrations with each monthly meeting featuring a new agenda. For its Feb. 1 meeting, members will have a chance to do a “make and take” project.

“The projects are always something different. It’s a small kit to make a pendant, earrings or a charm for a bracelet,” Wernette said.

In the past, the society has had various speakers, including Sue Bishop from Victorian Purses and Todd Thurlow, who does blown glass and bead work said Wernette. “We have about three speakers a year,” she said.

Along with its monthly, rotating agenda, Genesee Area Bead Society members receive discount cards to three participating bead shops: Beadin Mon’ on Miller Rd. in Flint Twp.; Bead Haven in Frankenmuth; and Beadifferent Boutique in Oxford. Membership for the year is $10, which includes three “make and takes,” discount cards and more. The discount cards gives members a 10 percent discount all the time, and 20 percent off at the first full, three-day weekend of the month. Attendance to the meetings is not required unless a member wants a “make and take.” Memberships are available by mail or in-person at one of the meetings. Interested individuals need to send a SASE, with all their information, to: President Linda Wernette, 3109 Wagon Trail, Flint, MI 48507.

In addition to Wernette, the Genesee Area Bead Society is headed up by Vice President Sandy Hargrove and Secretary Judith Carter. Wernette also serves as the society’s treasurer.
