— Nutcracker, the magical holiday ballet, will delight audiences in three performances — at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Dec. 4 and at 3 p.m., Dec. 5, at The Whiting, 1241 E. Kearsley St. in Flint.
This year marks 35 years of the Flint Institute of Music’s presenting of this historical ballet to the greater Flint community. This exciting family tradition features:
• world-class professional dancers from Collage Dance Collective of Memphis who regularly perform throughout the U.S. and Europe
• more than 80 dancers from the Flint School of Performing Arts
• the timeless Tchaikovsky score performed by the Flint Symphony Orchestra
• colorful, sparkling costumes
• a fantasyland setting with sets inspired by the great ballrooms of Viennese palaces.
The Nutcracker performances are under the artistic direction of Karen Mills Jennings, and the Flint Symphony Orchestra will be led by guest conductor, David Mairs. Mrs. Jennings celebrates 30 years with the Nutcracker as a past performer and, currently, as Artistic Director.
Nutcracker is an enchanting ballet set to the music of Tchaikovsky. The evil Mouse King has turned Herr Drosselmeyer’s nephew into a nutcracker doll in revenge for the mousetrap Drosselmeyer built, which killed nearly all the mice in the land. The spell can only be broken when someone loves the nutcracker doll in spite of his appearance and when the evil Mouse King is killed.
At a holiday party at the Stahlbaum’s, the story unfolds in an exciting battle between the Mouse King and the nutcracker. Finally, the spell is broken with the help of Drosselmeyer’s godchild, Clara, a young girl who comes to love the nutcracker doll. In the last half of this captivating story, Clara and the Nutcracker Prince are transported to the Kingdom of Sweets for an enchanting display of the Sugar Plum Fairy’s court.
