FLINT — The Folks of Flint, A Tribute will be hanging at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Flint until early October. The 58-portrait exhibition portrays the people beyond the national headlines, the heroic faces of men, women and children who have shaped Flint’s past and reflect its future. A grand reveal and VIP event on Aug. 23 will include portrait-sitters, their families and supporters of the project.
Created by native son and renowned Pulitzer-prize winning photographer Dan White, the portraits are a yearlong journey through a community that has become a comedian’s “punch line” for its poisonous water.
With the help of a Kickstarter campaign, multiple donors and a corporate underwriting sponsorship by ELGA Credit Union and The Whiting, White was able to spend considerable time and effort in Flint to identify the folks he felt would represent a broad swath of the city. ELGA Credit Union plans to feature six of the large portraits in their new downtown branch.
The grand reveal and VIP reception will take place at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 5:30-8 p.m. For more information or to donate to the Kickstarter campaign, visit www.kickstarter.com/ projects/269759202/the-folks-of-flintatribute.
