The Lions did what?

Fat Guy Corner

The Devil was seen wearing a pair of hockey skates and a winter coat late Sunday afternoon. The Detroit Lions won a football game in Green Bay! Hell must have frozen over, as the saying goes! Sorry, couldn’t resist that one!

Yes, the year was 1991 and Rodney Peete was the quarterback the last time Detroit came home with a victory from the State of Wisconsin. Yes, finally Matt Stafford has won a game under center on the road defeating a team with a winning record. Stafford was in kindergarten when Detroit last won up there. I am glad to see that storyline finally fade away. I really got sick of it year in and year out, to be quite honest. The saddest part is, the “Sissy Kats” did everything in their football powers to give the game to the Packers. I guess the Packers were not in the mood to accept gifts because it’s not quite the holiday season yet. Green Bay losing at home to Detroit was so unexpected I think Aaron Rodgers did a quadruple discount double check in the locker room. Oh, well Detroit, you can start up another streak next season in Green Bay. Detroit probably will, too, you can count on that. Detroit is home Sunday to take on the Oakland Raiders. Roaaarrrr or Meeooowwww? That’s the question come Sunday.

Out of the running

There were some college football teams who eliminated themselves from the playoffs over the weekend. We all can wave good bye to Baylor, Stanford and Utah. They all lost and have no shot at the college football playoffs. I will say with Oklahoma’s win over Baylor they are in the mix for a college playoff berth. Oklahoma still plays Oklahoma State yet, so either OSU or Oklahoma will be eliminated after they hook up.

The Michigan State Spartans have a mega huge game Saturday at the “Horse Shoe” in Columbus, Ohio with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The experts in Las Vegas have installed the Buckeyes as 13.5 point favorites. I say no way to their prognostication. The Buckeyes are just not two touchdowns better than the green and white. I really like MSU’s chances to win down there, actually.

The health of Connor Cook at quarterback will play a large part of MSU’s chances of winning. MSU needs some great quarterback play to beat Ohio State on Saturday. The Spartans defense needs to step up and play big, too. I think it will. The Buckeyes will be a tough out at home, however. The Prediction: Scarlet and Gray 37 and Green and White 31. The fact I picked the Buckeyes to win will make all you Sparty fans happy because this year I have been wrong a lot more than normal. The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m.

Title hopes still alive

The Michigan Wolverines will also have a tough game at Penn State on Saturday. Michigan won a thrilling double overtimer at Indiana last week. The win kept Michigan’s hopes alive for a shot at the Big Ten title game. Michigan will have to be rooting for Ohio State to beat MSU on Saturday. Michigan fans don’t root for the Buckeyes ever, but I bet they will on Saturday. This game will be tough on Big Blue with the Buckeyes coming to Ann Arbor next week. Michigan better be ready to go toe to toe with the Nittany Lions. Penn State is no push over, especially at home. The prediction: Maize and Blue 23 and Penn State 20.

Bringing back the magic

The Detroit Red Wings’ young hockey club welcomes back the Magic Man, Pavel Datsyuk, to the lineup. Pavel will take a couple of weeks to get himself into game shape. Detroit needs No. 13 to help this stumbling offense. The Red Wings struggle many nights offensively so far in the early season. One side note: When coach Jeff Blashill speaks, he sounds just like Mike Babcock to me!! Am I right?
